A Peace of What?

posted by on October 10 at 16:53 PM

Martti Ahtisaari, a former Finnish president who has done a lot of international conflict resolution work, has won the Nobel Peace Prize. Many expected the Prize to go to Chinese dissidents as a little slap to China after this year’s Olympics.

But another group was snubbed, maybe even robbed, and the mainstream media, predictably, isn’t paying any attention:

Dr. David Ray Griffin and everyone involved in the 9/11 truth movement have been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. The recipient of the Peace Prize will be announced this Friday, October 10.

Let the conspiracy theories begin. I hope they involve evil Finns.

Who the hell submitted that nomination?

Why do you say they were "snubbed, maybe even robbed"? I can't tell if you are joking.

I wonder if it's a sort of retroactive thing- a book I read on the Baltics had a side bit about how there should have been some Finnish winners during the Cold War.

Ever since the Nobel Prize went to Al Gore -- a shrill partisan who sows hate and fear all the while farting away in a 2 million dollar houseboat -- it's clear they are European stooges who will nominate whoever humiliates America the most.

Okay, we get it. People who think something has been covered up are not as intelligent as you, and are not to be taken seriously.

You've made your fucking point. Laugh at the "Truthers."

It is clear now that the movement for an investigation of the events of 11 Sept 2001 as a crime will not move forward on a time frame that would bring any in the present administration to justice.

But it gets really tiresome to have to listen to Dan Savage about U.S. foreign policy and to you about this.

You are both smart guys, which may lead you think that you are smarter then others about matters you are unqualified for and have not seriously considered.

Um. Nominations mean nothing. George W. Bush was nominated for a peace prize. How the hell can you possibly get riled up, knowing that there are ALWAYS enough crazies to nominate any old kook willing to shill out the dough?

Pity Griffin has gotten himself into this movement. He's actually a pretty good theologian.

Why is it that Griffin's critics here seem make no mention at all of the actual substance of his research? Unless you've actually read his work, including you Paul Constant, STFU.

From Wikipedia:

"When the past nominations were released it was discovered that Adolf Hitler was nominated in 1939 by Erik Brandt, a member of the Swedish Parliament. Brandt retracted the nomination after a few days. Other infamous nominees included Joseph Stalin and Benito Mussolini. However, since nomination requires only support from one qualified person (e.g., a history professor), these unusual nominations do not represent the opinions of the Nobel committee itself."
