Theater Free Shrek Tickets
posted by September 18 at 10:06 AM
onApparently, Shrek isn’t doing so well—they’re giving away free tickets, according to a reader who just sent me this email:
We are offering complimentary tickets to SHREK THE MUSICAL at The 5th Avenue Theatre (1308 5th Avenue) for the following performances:
Wed 9/17 at 7:30 PM – deadline to RSVP is Wed 9/17 at 12:00 PM noon
Thurs 9/18 at 8:00 PM – deadline to RSVP is Thurs 9/18 at 10:00 AM
Friday 9/19 at 8:00 PM – deadline to RSVP is Friday 9/19 at 10:00 AM
Sunday 9/21 at 7:00 PM – deadline to RSVP is Friday 9/19 at 10:00 AM
If you are interested please email dwtheatrical@dreamworks.com and specify the performance, number of tickets (not to exceed 6), name for will call and the organization you represent. Tickets are first come first serve, and you will receive a confirmation. Tickets will be left at will call one hour prior to each performance and I.D. is required to pick up the tickets. Please know that this is an almost 3 hour, sit-in-your-seat production, and as such is not appropriate for really young children.
Not to exceed six? Giving away tickets—for seats that cost between $50 and $90—in blocks of six is bad news.
Still: they’re free. This is your chance to walk out on a Broadway show at intermission and not feel like you’ve wasted your money.

UPDATE
The offer’s off. From the emails the Shrek people are sending out:
Thank you for your email regarding Shrek The Musical. The private offer that was sent to select group of friends of the production and the 5th Avenue Theatre offering complimentary tickets was intended as a thank you to them for their work supporting the show in Seattle and was mistakenly posted on line for the general public. The “thank you” e-mail was never intended to be made public.
Sorry, everybody. I’m a ruiner!

I saw Shrek the 2nd night it premiered. It's a 3 out of 5 stars. The 5th Avenue sucked as a venue because they turned the AC off a few minutes before the intermission and it was very stuffy and uncomfortable. I think it might be a better play if it was in a better venue like the Paramount.
good LORD I love Lindy West.
THREE HOURS!!!
HOLY SHIT
the mind boggles
My 7 year old son, presumably a key demographic, was not impressed. He told his stepgrandparents at intermission "You know, I have the movies, we could just leave now and you could find out how it ends at home." Alas, my clever son's plan was thwarted and they all had to sit through the whole, very long show. The adults liked it well enough, the group of kids ranged in reactions but averaged out to tepid about it.
I have a very high gay gay gay tolerance for musical theater, but this show was PAINFUL. I adore Sutton Foster, but even she couldn't save Dreck the Musical. See what I did there?
I’m sorry that you have posted old and incorrect information about Shrek the Musical on your blog. The private offer of tickets was sent to select friends of the production and the 5th Avenue Theatre to thank them for their work supporting the show in Seattle. The “thank you” e-mail was never transferrable and the allocation is full, so it is inaccurate to say that “free tickets are available.” Yes, we should have been clearer that this was not a public offer -- and that it would not be valid if forwarded! Everyone on Shrek has had a great time in Seattle and the company will be sad to leave.------
A Brown, show rep

There are no free tickets. Here's an excerpt from the email reply I got when I requested free tickets:

ACK! i didn't mean for that 3x! and i only clicked once but this !()@*^(*!&^'n IE just blinked a bunch and i was dead in the water for a few mins....
a thousand apologies.
Read the book.
The original book, written by William Steig, is so far superior to the watered down happy ending crap that is the movies and musical.
Shrek SMELLS. The princess is really ugly- and thats why he loves her.
I saw the show last month and loved it. But then I also loved Young Frankenstein so my taste is questionable!
Ries @14 is right. The book is better. Also, Fungus the Bogeyman, by Raymond Briggs, is a phenomenal book about the same sort of disgusting ogre topic.
Maybe this has something to do with it:
"Please know that this is an almost 3 hour, sit-in-your-seat production, and as such is not appropriate for really young children."
Why the hell would you make a musical based on a children's animated movie not appropriate for young children? And they're having a hard time selling tickets? I wonder why?
They couldn't PAY me enough to sit through that.
The real crime here is that someone would post a comp offer meant as a thank you for partners of the show and use this as a way to slander a kind gesture.
The writer of this article has no tact, it appears.
Theatres, restaurants, retailers and hotels are all seeing drops in sales because of the economic concerns and the rising levels of gas prices. We do not see articles saying a retailer is having a sale, therefore their clothes must be bad. We don't see speculation that a hotel doesn't have good service in an expose of how many discounts they're offering via priceline and travelzoo.
This show is beautiful and while it's not for everyone, I would venture to guess that for every one displeased patron there were hundreds and hundreds who had a fantastic time, creating lasting memories with their guests.
I wish I could see it again, but I can't. It is a great piece of musical theatre. Chris Seiber will get an oscar nom if not the award, as should the writers and director.
