Working Hard for That Elderly Vote

posted by on August 14 at 14:55 PM

I’ve noted many times before that Barack Obama’s support is lightest among voters in the over-60 demographic. The campaign has clearly noticed this too, or it would not be sending me press releases (and handy photos) such as this:

SEATTLE, WA – Today, Obama supporters visited senior centers across Washington to celebrate the 73rd anniversary of the day when Franklin Delano Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act. Volunteers delivered Social Security “birthday” cakes to local seniors and shared information with them about Senator Obama’s plan to protect social security.

Aw. And shhh, don’t tell the campaign how many people over 60 actually read The Stranger.

Now, to be fair, we should point out that John McCain is YOUNGER than the Social Security Act.

By one year.

probably more than you'd care to admit...the average age of a Stranger reader is about 40, so I'm guessing you have as many 65 year olds reading, as you do 15 year olds...

And, if Sen McSame has his way, he'll complete the Bush/Cheney plan to replace SS with investments in the Stock Market, in funds run by cronies of his.

Doesn't that feel ... safer?

Congressman Rahm Emanuel was in town last week at an event stumping for Obama, and he acknowledged that Barack's got trouble as the citizens get older — until they hit 80, then their support for him is through the roof.

across Washington? As in, State?

Those supporters would have been better deployed going to MT or NV. Washington State is in the bag.

If this is Wash DC where Obama will probably get about 80% of the vote, VA would've been a better use of their time.

I promise that if the stranger is still around, I'll read it when I'm 60 (28 years).

Those of us who are under 60 should be more concerned about Social Security than today's senior citizens. Who we elect this November may affect whether the system will still be in place by the time we are old enough to collect. I would rather have the system intact and not privatized by the time I reach retirement age.

I was discussing Johnny Depp with my 30 year old colleage at work. He opined that Depp was one of the "greatest actors of his (my friend's) generation". When I pointed out that Depp was closer in age to me (47) he exclaimed "wow, I didn't think he was that old".

The point being that hip Seattle needs to look in a mirror some time before attacking the kettle. Leading GenXers such as Courtney Love are pushing 50 and social security starts at 62 last time I checked.

God help us if McCain wins; he will destroy the last of Social Security, and FDR will rise from the grave, pissed off and roll over McCain with a pimped out Hoveround.

My dad is 66 and he reads The Stranger with enthusiasm. Especially the bar reviews.
