Alexandria Muller’s Untitled (circa 1930), oil on board

At Martin-Zambito Gallery. (Gallery site here.)

Everything that was ever out of style with the mainstream narrative of history, art history, or art commerce eventually seems to finds its way to the humble little storefront at 721 East Pine Street in Seattle: Martin-Zambito Gallery. The gallery specializes in forgotten regionalists, overlooked women, and excluded artists of color, usually from the first half of the 20th century. These are the castoffs, but the ones worth looking at. The above painting—the twisty tree trunk makes it—is by Alexandria Muller, an artist I’d never heard of before. According to the gallery, she lived from 1899 to 1977.

That's funny, Jen cuz when I first saw that in a quick scroll I was like, "Grandma Moses?!?!?" Interesting to note it's an outsider woman artist...I love that tree -- it looks like the one that slaps Dorothy's hand in The Wizard of Oz.

Cool of you to highlight this gallery -- may just have to go take a look.

that tree is the african tulip tree, Spathodea campanulata. it makes me want to paint pictures, too.

Those men are amazing. I got to hear his story of discovering a couple of Louise Crow paintings first hand and it made me weep openly.

Ooh, this is actually kind of exciting after all the conceptual college stuff. I'm intrigued by the Seattle Camera Club. I didn't much like seeing the word "Chihuly" on their web page, but I guess a little of that dirt gets in everywhere these days.

Hmmm. I think I'll visit that gallery today.

Wow!, an actual piece of art on the SLOG, say it aint so!

notice what sets this apart from the rest of the dreck that is posted?. It actually takes skill as an artist to create that piece. The rest only take skill as a bullshitter to make dumb people believe that you created art

It is really cool that you posted about this piece. I agree, it is an unfashionable, beautiful painting. I was wondering what kind of reception it would have if it were contemporary.
