The giant bugs have finally come for us, and they’re devouring the Seattle Times weather cam first.

Ladies and gentlemen, uh, we've just lost the picture, but what we've seen speaks for itself. The Corvair spacecraft has apparently been taken over -- 'conquered' if you will -- by a master race of giant space ants. It's difficult to tell from this vantage point whether they will consume the captive earth men or merely enslave them. One thing is for certain: there is no stopping them; the ants will soon be here. And I for one welcome our new insect overlords. I'd like to remind them that as a trusted TV personality, I can be helpful in rounding up others to toil in their underground sugar caves.

This post is more entertaining than "Cloverfield", which I watched this weekend, and a movie I like to now refer to as, the "Friends" episode entitled, "The One Where Everyone But Monica Gets Killed By the Big Pollywog Monster"

Bah. Wake me when it crosses the SLUT tracks in an eastbound direction.

Can someone please send this bug over to downtown Bremerton? We've got some shiny new empty condos and an oversized empty marina that need to be devoured. We also have a giant worthless hole in the ground that would be perfect for the laying of eggs.

@6, Gabe: I was wondering about that. Is Bremerton's plan to turn into the new Sausalito foundering? Look, all of the drawbacks of living in the city, but none of the advantages!

@9: I guess it depends on who you ask. They can't sell the condos (just auctioned off 18 for a little over half the asking price, none have closed yet many are not going to). The Marina was built on property taxes paid by us homeowners, largely to cater to the non-existing condo owners. The pork barrel hole in the ground has been overbudget since day one, had to be rerouted because they didn't bother to figure out what was already underground (in an old Navy town no less) and is designed to usher ferry folks away from the fabulously redeveloped downtown as quickly as possible lest they spend money there.

We could use some giant space bugs pronto in my book.

There is fun stuff going on in the Charleston area though...galleries and music venues and small local businesses with soul in the seedier part of town.

Forgive a little critical analysis of the joke, but the reason this picture is funny is that it appears that there is a giant bug the size of the Space Needle far away from the weather cam, over at lower Queen Anne. But by referring to bugs devouring the weather cam, you remove the "giant" possibility and make them just regular bugs who aren't near the Space Needle at all but are instead crawling on the weather cam. It's all about perspective.

That bug is supposed to be there...The Blethens's had to lease some of their weather stations to the U.W. Bug Department for use in some field studies.

It's very expensive to keep 4 generations of Blethen's in speed cars and Gucci.

@10, Bremerton is one of my favorite towns. Great thrift stores. I miss the old ferry dock, before they built the freakin' freeway interchange one. And those houses they bulldozed over by the base -- so they could plant grass. Huh? Very mysterious decision-making.

I had no idea there was a part of town called "Charlestown" though. Is that over by the bakery with the awesome sign?

@14, fnarf:

Yup, McGavin's bakery is on Callow in the Charleston area. Charleston was a seperate town way back when, up until the '30's or so I think (only been here since '89 myself).

The bulldozed houses for grassy area is a result of the war. It's a "Buffer Zone" so suicide bombers can't drive trucks through fences into PSNS without first getting shot up, thus exploding in less important areas, so civilians can get blown up instead of soldiers. There's one downtown, and another in the Charleston area disguised as "The Gateway Project," another ploy to get people out of town as fast as possible when not doubling as a buffer zone.

If the hole in the ground ever becomes a tunnel, it will spit you out on Burwell. That will lead you to Callow, where left puts you in Charleston and right puts you into the Gateway to outta town.

Charleston is the home of several good thrift stores and junk shops, an awesome authentic Mexican Taqueria, Thai food, Chinese food, art galleries (the AFU), the recently opened Charleston music venue (all ages and bar), several tattoo shops, a ceramic studio, The Ironhead Saloon, a dance studio, a dollar store, a smoke shop, and 3 porn shops. All within a few blocks. If you are coming to B'town, skip downtown and head there.

If you are a giant bug, head downtown.

ugh, left on Callow takes you outta town, right into Charleston from Burwell. I managed to reverse that in the above post. No matter, Burwell is out of commission for a while now anyway...as is most of Pacific downtown. Tear everything up at once, what a grand idea!
