Mission Accomplished

posted by on April 16 at 9:00 AM

How many billions have we spent training the Iraqi army—you remember the Iraqi army, right? They were going to stand up so that we could stand down? That army? It is standing up now—so that it can run away. From this morning’s NYT:

A company of Iraqi soldiers abandoned their positions on Tuesday night in Sadr City, defying American soldiers who implored them to hold the line against Shiite militias. The retreat left a crucial stretch of road on the front lines undefended for hours and led to a tense series of exchanges between American soldiers and about 50 Iraqi troops who were fleeing.

Capt. Logan Veath, a company commander in the 25th Infantry Division, pleaded with the Iraqi major who was leading his troops away from the Sadr City fight, urging him to return to the front. “If you turn around and go back up the street those soldiers will follow you,” Captain Veath said. “If you tuck tail and cowardly run away they will follow up that way, too.”

Captain Veath’s pleas failed, and senior American and Iraqi commanders mounted an urgent effort to regain the lost ground.

A photograph of the Iraqi soldiers in full retreat is here—and, hey, would the next college student that has a chance to ask John McCain a question ask Mr. Ten Thousand Years about this story instead of asking McCain to have a shot with him?

All the candidates should be required to do two shots before answering questions.

When I read this story I had a flash back to 1973 and the fall of Saigon.

Hmm, maybe the 'mercan army should have thought of that before asking them to shoot their own people.

iraqi politicians: lazy. maaaaany stories in papers (nytimes) shows (charlie rose) etc of laaaaziness on the part of their politicians.

their soldiers are distracted with getting cd's out of broken down buildings, laughing and playing grab ass. it sounds like a serious case of the pussies.

it doesn't seem like they really want it.

stupid fucking bush for going in. holy fucking cow stupid. but to just pull out now and run away and be like "you guys take it over" is also soooooooo fucking dumb. its like the republicans are like "you want fucking dumb....top THIS" adn teh democrats are like "no no no...I'll show YOU fucking dumb...watch THIS" and they just go back and forth, trumping one another with total stupidity.

but i digress. arugula. I think we need to focus on endives, arugula and whole food comments in iowa via the almighty barak.

Oh God, I just love the reactions of the U.S. Army soldiers in the article. They're so completely shocked that:

1. Poorly-equipped Iraqi forces don't want to lead a fight in front of much better-equipped U.S. forces - no shit, that's why they'll never really take charge until we leave.

2. Iraqis are reluctant to kill other Iraqis - no shit, what did you expect?

Well, if they're leaving, why don't we?

Sounds fair ...

"Iraqis are reluctant to kill other Iraqis - no shit, what did you expect?"

That's surprising fucking news to me, seeing as I keep hearing nothing from Iraq except stories of Iraqis killing Iraqis, in addition to Americans killing Iraqis and Iraqis killing Americans. Also, sometimes Americans killing Americans, but very rarely, at least on that side of the world.
