Commenter-Generated Audio Art

posted by on April 21 at 11:47 AM

Earlier this morning, Dan posted a report of some blood-curdling, dingo-ate-my-baby screaming that disturbed the sleep of a citizen last night near Denny and Olive Way.

In the comments to the post, JC wrote:

There’s someone who lives in the Bonneville, across from Half Price Books, who screams out her window at all hours of the day. I made a recording of it once and posted it to YouTube.

JC wasn’t kidding.

As JC writes, “We call her the Dolphin Lady.” Does anyone know anything else about this beguiling screamstress?

Tourette's and compulsive lying are hilarious, but all other mental illnesses, including whatever the dolphin lady has, are freaking scary.

I'm totally going to die in exactly seven days after listening to that, aren't I?

Ugh, Tourette's is totally not a "mental illness", Victorian Victor.

Ever think of calling the police, or apartment management, or taking matters into your own hands, hot tipster? Management can evict her for disturbing the neighbors, you know.

Hmm. I think this is bullshit. I've lived at the Bonneville for over two years and have never head anything like this.

This happened a lot last autumn, although I think I hear a bit of it now and again. It probably just coincides with the weather being warm enough for people to open their windows. It is a pitiful sound, and my cheap recording equipment distorts it into an even creepier sound.

Everyone’s reaction (who hears the recording) is to dial the police and such. I never have. First, it’s so random that I can’t guarantee that cops would hear anything when they arrived. It could be one little outburst and then nothing for hours or days at a time, or it might go on for literally hours. You never know when it will start or end.

Second, and I know this recording doesn’t demonstrate it, but sometimes the sounds are sort of just “casual” - like someone just having a conversation with herself, or self-unaware singing with the headphones on-type sounds. As eerie as it can sound, it just sort of became part of the neighborhood scene. Most of the surrounding neighbors know about it. The responses to it range from screaming back at her in the same tone, or your basic “SHUT THE FUCK UP!” Are we all just a bunch of heartless, desensitized cowards, sitting back while someone is being tortured across the street from us? Obviously, we don’t think so. But it is a mystery.

Our guess is that it’s someone with Tourettes, or something similar... but we’re not sure. I’ve gone so far as to go up to the suspected window and call up to her. “Uh... hello? Why do, eh, why do you scream all the time? Hello?” A next-door neighbor opened up his window and I asked him about it. His response was something like “Oh yeah, THAT lady!” He had no idea what was up with it, but didn’t seemed to bothered by it, besides the obvious annoyance of living next door to it.

Part of me feels bad just for bringing it up. Like I’m making fun of some Helen Keller type who should just be left alone in peace. But, last autumn, (and maybe when the weather gets warmer again) it was just so ever-present that I just felt the need to unravel the mystery.

My next-door neighbor periodically shouts out for help. Sometimes in the middle of the night. Sometimes in the middle of the day. I don't know if it's nightmares, some sort of PTSD, or if the bastard is just trying to fuck with me. Truthfully, I'd rather not know. He's a seriously creepy motherfucker.

OMG! That is completely scary. I couldn't even listen to the whole thing, but I think I'm going to have nightmares anyway!!! Not safe for crazy people warning next time please! :)
