The Best Thing Ever

posted by on March 14 at 17:58 PM

Stressful week? I have the ultimate relaxation tip for you. This guy:

bob-ross.jpg

You cannot be stressed out while watching Bob Ross paint. That soothing voice, the happy trees, the tranquil landscapes, the occasional clip of a baby squirrel. It’s so relaxing that while watching I have literally started to drool like my cats do when they’re really happy. It is that good.

The only way to see Bob is to catch reruns on PBS, or to buy DVDs from his website. It’s a bit pricey at $46 a series (13 shows), but trust me, knowing you have The Joy of Painting on demand is priceless.

And that’s everything for me! Thanks everyone, it’s been fun.

And he's been dead for years to boot. Now THAT'S what I call relaxed.

I used to watch him with my grandma when i was little. She found him soothing too, she'd often be snoring within minutes and i'd be left to discover how he paints the detail on pine trees.

I learned how to paint sharks from this guy. He was brilliant . . . and so zen.

This guy has been parodied more often than Mister Rogers. But I still enjoy him on the PBS reruns.

Watch the BBC comedy series, Peep Show, wherein BR is a God who is consulted like an oracle. Brilliantly funny.

Did anyone ever paint along with the show though, really? I remember watching it as a child but I certainly never pulled out my (non-existent) palette and dabbed any strokes of my own.

RIP Bob.

he was too mellow to be american...right? tell me he was canadian. maybe not, but he sure gave off that "no rage has ever touched me" vibe you only ever get off canadians.

He died lonely and destitute in an unheated and ramshackle farmhouse in Wyoming with a really striking white barked birch tree in the front yard framing some impressive snow capped teton mts.

Ms. Exelizabeth, I don't know if you saw my comment in your video game thread, but if you want relaxing then play some Endless Ocean on the Wii. I even know some cats who like to watch the fish on the screen.

My lamented late partner (yeah, the artist) used to watch him and laugh. He got quite good at imitating Bob, to great comic effect.

Hey Exelizabeth, you were the best! Thanks for referencing that Deborah Cameron article in your post about the Sutherland book. I read Cameron's Feminist Critique of Language a few years ago, but it's time to get caught up on her. She's gooood!

Seriously, I wish you were a regular poster on Slog. Best of luck with grad school and teaching!

The local comedian Pat Cashman did a
very funny "send-up" of him on the
"Almost Live" show. Sometimes on very
early sunday mornings you can catch it
in re-run.

I remember watching him (and often falling asleep to him) on Saturday afternoons just before This Old House and The Victory Garden...
