Wait, Who Are the 18-to-24s Voting for, Again?

posted by on January 29 at 16:39 PM

In a really depressing piece of news, the National Endowment for the Arts has found that nearly half of all 18-to-24-year-olds don’t read for pleasure at all. Meanwhile, Americans ages 15 to 24 spend almost two hours a day watching TV, and only seven minutes reading anything at all. (In fairness to the kids, older folks are only a bit better, with only 59 percent of adults between 25 and 44 reading books that aren’t required for work or school.)

A subtle prod against Obama?

hahaha nice slog title ECB!

You're probably just trying to chum the waters, Erica, but really, your tendency to openly disdain Obama supporters is not helping your chosen candidate one bit.

@1: Nah. Couldn't be. These are the apathetic non-voters, not the educated, idealistic, ambitious, hard-working young people who are politically active.

Is it worse that I ONLY read for pleasure?

Oh well, I'm not in the target group anyway.

I like to read hustler. I really appreciate it's portrayal of women as being subserviant to male sexual gratification.

And I am gay...I just like to objectify women.

Plus the jokes are pretty funny. Anyone want to hear any?

according to the Pew Research Center (via the LA Times), the 18-29 generation emerges as overwhelmingly anti-choice:
http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/politics/la-na-youth22jan22,1,3740482.story?coll=la-news-politics-national

and the same demographic made "Meet The Spartans" the #1 movie this past weekend...

Wait, who are the college graduates voting for again?

Well, in South Carolina, the 35 and under white crowd voted for Obama.

Yup.

Something ECB doesn't want you to know.

Just like she doesn't want you to know how many delegates Obama has.

Hint: it's on the front page of CNN, and Obama's way ahead.

I suppose we'll be lucky if this demographic votes at all. If only we had a candidate to awaken their humanity and drive them to the polls.

ECB must have known this was a cheap dig... Perhaps she likes all our comments about her posting "style". Maybe when Slog's readership does a collective eye-roll, that's something accomplished.

God damn, but you are stupid, Will. I'm starting to think that when people here complain about the "Obamatrons", they're really just talking about you. You didn't catch even a whiff of what Erica was saying here, did you?

You know, Americans have never read much.

What percentage of Americans ages 18-24 are students? When I was in college, 18-22, I didn't do any pleasure reading because I was too swamped with course readings. When I wasn't reading, I was in class, sleeping, volunteering, or talking to my friends. I did read the newspaper each day, though, though I can't say that was for pleasure.

Can I just take a moment to be deeply, deeply ashamed of my peers in this age range? I'm fortunate that most of my friends went to college, which narrows it down to people who already have a propensity for reading a lot.

"It is almost impossible to mention books in bulk without grossly overpraising most of them. Until one has some kind of professional relationship with books one does not discover how bad the majority of them are."

- George Orwell, on reviewing books

Good for Americans aged 18 to 24, for not wasting their time reading Jonah Goldberg's "Liberal Fascism" or the new biography of Tom Cruise.

so our votes shouldn't matter...looks like the clintonista's know what's best for us folks, no need to vote. honestly her supporters scare me to the point where if she did get the democratic nomination i don't think i would vote for her.

15 to 24 year olds spend only 7 minutes a day reading ANYTHING? But they spend like 100 hours a week online. They can't be play WoW and masturbating the WHOLE time, can they?

Oh, they can? Yikes.

What's it matter really if a whole bunch of slackers vote the same way I do? Doesn't bother me how many fucking idiots listen to Queen, Queen still rules, OK.

Congrats to the Bush administration for churning out 18-24 y.os that aren't interested in reading within the 8 years of fucking up the education system. Of course, I'm sure the Clinton I admin has some responsibility for this as well, but not the extent as the Bush II admin.

Again, I'll say, my mother (god rest her soul) taught me not to hate others. But I hate Hillary Clinton and her supporters with a white hot fury. White HOT, I tell you!

@14 - this was a comparison of Americans to Americans, so my point still stands.

And, if you knew anything, you'd know most kids nowadays watch the Web not the Tube.

They're not encouraged to read - all the tests make sure of that.

But they read a lot more than we did - on the Net, not on the printed page.

well, i'm 26, in law school, and watch about an hour of tv a day. the daily show and the colbert report. i read about, ohhhhhh, 5 hours a day. none of it's for pleasure.

and i voted for obama today.

Well, pleasure is pain. Or was that pain is pleasure?

Thanks for voting!

People who read for pleasure don't have time for stupid surveys.

i actually really like jacksonville. the key is to live in the urban core. riverside, avondale, downtown, springfield, san marco. they really are great areas to be in. i grew up here, moved away for 5 years for undergrad, then came back, and it was amazing all the new stuff that has opened up. it's just harder to find than in larger cities.

Seriously? You're now seeing everything through the filter of your anger at Obama? Are you able to eat a meal without wondering if it's a dish that Obama might like?

Well, you learn something every day. I couldn't hack the weather, though, that much I know (might be nice on a day like today, though).

No kidding, @30. If Obama went bike riding, one imagines ECB would start shopping for cars.

You are a child. And a child who is going to help get John McCain elected president. It's ludicrous to think that the Clintons are going to beat McCain.

Here's what I don't get: Does anyone seriously think Hillary won't get the nomination? Sheesh, ECB, your candidate has it locked up. Isn't that enough? You need to grind the heel?

that's it ECB, patronize the only people that can prevent a republican from becoming president again; youth.

yeah, it's warm like fuck down here about 4 months out of the year. you get used to it though. i really like visiting the snow, for boarding reasons, but i HATE living in snow. so i'd rather be here where i can lay on the beach 7 months out of the year, and also wear t shirts 300 days out of the year.

for example, the high today was 73.

They even have an October awards show on NBC!...ok, so it's not tabloid glamour but at least the WGA can't picket it...or can they? :p

I read somewhere else about this same story that nonfiction books weren't counted. I didn't find that in ECB's link but I wasn't looking that hard for it either.
If that's the case I'd be one of those in the demographic who doesn't read much for pleasue when the reality is I've been a bookworm since gradeschool but recently I've read almost only nonfiction.... and all for pleasure.

Erica really has become pathetic.

Obama consistently wins more educated demographics, while the bulk of Hilary's support comes from less educated groups.

So, please just shut the fuck up.
