Town to Ban Swearing in Bars

posted by on January 9 at 8:00 AM

From MSNBC

A St. Louis-area town is considering a bill that would ban swearing in bars, along with table-dancing, drinking contests and profane music.

City officials contend the bill is needed to keep rowdy crowds under control because the historic downtown area gets a little too lively on some nights.

Gee, I hope Greg Nickels isn’t reading Slog.

You're afraid that if he reads the Slog he will find out that MSNBC exists?

That sounds like a whole lot of protected speech they're banning there.

It's the logical next step: no smoking in bars; no swearing in bars; next step no drinking in bars, cuz that's like, gosh, bad for you and all.

I fucking hate this town.

Also, the historic downtown area gets a little too lively on some nights.

I worked at a brewery in the historic downtown St. Charles area for years, and believe me, those rubes do get rowdy. Friday nights were fight nights...

"you lookin at my girl, asshole?"
"Fuck off, prick."

FIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You start banning one thing, you start banning another.

I would expect this in Salt Lake City before St. Louis.

Wow, I'd go to the courts immediately. That's basically a free-speech violation.

@4: Well, the ban on smoking in bars doesn't seem too bad. At my favorite gay club, there are certain rooms where you're not allowed to smoke. Here in Florida, there's no smoking permitted in restaurants. But those other things (no drinking or swearing in bars) would be ridiculous!
