2008 Toni Morrison, She of the Famous “First Black President” Line, On Obama
posted by January 28 at 8:50 AM
onHere’s Toni Morrison in 1998, writing about Bill Clinton:
This is our first black President. Blacker than any actual black person who could ever be elected in our children’s lifetime.
Now Morrison tells Obama: “You are the man for this time.”

Knowing how the Clinton campaign operates, I'm sure they're going to slap together a press release now noting that Maya Angelou supports Hillary.*
* Yeah, I realize Maya Angelou is no Toni Morrison.
Personally, I don't think celebrity endorsements matter one way or the other.
But it's only the Clintons who are playing the race card, right? Just want to make sure I've got my meme right...
sven! you crack me up! you are like bill!
A lot of white folk who didn't know any black folk thought Morrison originated the "first black president" label.
Some still do.
#2: Oh, I wish that were so...
Clinton is still probably "blacker" than Obama.
Oh, snap!
Sven, that is a good call. :) But in fairness, Morrison is not part of the campaign, and if you (the general public "you", not you in particular) RTFA, she's actually really trying to not play the race card:
"Nor do I care very much for your race[s]," Morrison continues to Obama, "I would not support you if that was all you had to offer or because it might make me 'proud.' "
"In thinking carefully about the strengths of the candidates, I stunned myself when I came to the following conclusion: that in addition to keen intelligence, integrity and a rare authenticity, you exhibit something that has nothing to do with age, experience, race or gender and something I don't see in other candidates. That something is a creative imagination which coupled with brilliance equals wisdom.
Toni Morrison RULES.
Thatīs all.
Vanessa@9:
You're right. I rail against people who confuse HRC supporters with the HRC campaign; I should make the same distinction. I like Obama and think he genuinely doesn't want to play the race card. But many supporters and media pundits are only too happy to do so. I should have directed my comments to the chattering classes and Obamatons rather than the candidate (who I continue to like.)
Read Toni Morrison's article. Quote was taken out of context. (What else is new in America?)
