Maybe Washington State Taxpayers Would Wanna Pay to Upgrade Husky Stadium…

posted by on January 25 at 9:00 AM

…if the University of Washington gave every taxpayer a pair of those Terminator-style contact lenses researchers are developing at the UW. Here’s an actual CSI-style photo of one of the lenses:

“Looking through a completed lens, you would see what the display is generating superimposed on the world outside,” said Babak Parviz, a UW assistant professor of electrical engineering.

So the world would look a bit like this.

Oh, and Woodland Park bunny huggers may not want to follow the link to the UW’s page. They’re testing these lenses on rabbits, and there’s a freaky close-up picture of bunny’s eye with one of these terminator-style lenses. It’s all fun and games until a six-foot-tall rabbit cyborg from the fuuuuuurture shows up at your front door with a sawed-off shotgun looking to kill your mother before your ass has a chance to get born.

I love that you put the "poor fuzzy bunnies" warning at the end of the post. Heh. :D

Also, nifty shit. :D

Gee, cancer, AIDS, global warming, poverty and U of W is making "cool" contact lenses.

Really, I think that says it all.

Yup, no one at the UW is working on cancer, AIDS, global warming or poverty. They're all working on "cool" contact lenses. And now that those are done, I think the school is just closing.

Because all anyone ever does in college is read books, go to class, and come up with ideas while stoned like "Wouldn't it be COOL to see things like the Terminator?"

Husky Stadium desperately needs a renovation. It's a danger during an earthquake. We like to have fun outside of school, too. I thought that was part of the college experience.

Just think of the porn potential.

Can I look beam someone into a fucking grave yet or no?

Hey, Student: maybe if you'd like to have fun outside of school, you could PAY FOR IT YOUR OWN DAMN SELF.

College athletics is the single most corrupt human activity; it makes African elections look judicious and fair. People's lives are destroyed for the amusement of nimrods like you, and their very concept of the future is poisoned. "Student" athletics should be shut down, not subsidized further.

Posted by Fnarf | January 25, 2008 9:34 AM

Goddamn it, Fnarf. Stop making so much sense.

I'm not sure it is the 'single most corrupt activity', in the face of $60 billion in Wall Street bonuses a week before the shit hit the fan...

Elmer Fud's mom had better look out.

If "should" were "did" Fnarf would be a puddle of ashes and semen at a keyboard pointed towards Mecca.

Besides, they just built (and rebuilt) a large section of the stadium a mere 20 years ago.

If the geniuses behind that project couldn't create something with more than a 20 year life-span, or the U. wasn't interested in paying for something with a longer life, why should I have to shell out for it? Especially, since I'm never going to ever set foot in the place, unless Central or Western someday get Pac 10 (11? 12?) status.

I don't know much about th U of W, but I would imagine it a) costs a fortune, b) has a huge student body, and c) generates tons of revenue from football (which they don't have to use to pay for the athletes), SO....

Also, you can't have too many cool things inspired from The Terminator.

I'm sure that if the stadium were needed badly enough, SkyNet would demand it at gunpoint.

Football programs don't actually generate huge amounts of cash for the university. They generate huge amounts of cash for the athletic program. The U football coach is the state's highest-paid employee in almost every state in the union. Big-time sports is actually a huge drain on university resources, because every single player has an enormous support network devoted to baby-stepping him through his "classes" -- special dorms, special classes, special tutors, special food, special gyms, not to mention the vast network of illegal underground subsidies -- the donor cash, prostitutes, etc.

But of course virtually all college athletes come away with nothing -- no education, and no sports career either. The ones that do make it to the NFL for the most part cannot walk up a flight of stairs after a year or two, and cannot hold jobs of any kind. The average lifespan of a football lineman is under 50 years of age.

There is a vast literature on the corrupt and corrupting economics and social values of big-time college sports. Read Murray Sperber. It's America's biggest blind spot.

Fuck the stadium... animal experimentation needs to go. There are plenty of convicted Level3 Sex Offenders out there that would love to wear porn enhanced contact lenses. Leave the bunnies alone!!!

Welcome to our post-human future.

@8 UW is actually one of the few universities in the country that has an athletic department that's in the black. Not only that, but a successful athletic team really gets the alumni to send in fat checks. I certainly do wish that our society had better priorities, but as it is, investing in your football team ain't a bad idea.

Posted by Gitai | January 25, 2008 3:08 PM

You're right Gitai, a successful athletic team really does get the alumni to send in fat checks - TO THE ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT, where it is of no use to the rest of the university and the students who study there.

Posted by Brandon J. | January 25, 2008 4:29 PM

Ah, Brandon J, you're wrong!

Alumni send checks to other departments too... remember that story from a couple weeks ago? The former mayor of Everett sent an email to the President of UW offering two UW Law scholarships if the UW would fire the Athletic Director and the Football Coach?

See? Money going to other departments. :P

Posted by Phelix | January 25, 2008 6:42 PM

Why can't the UW use Qwest Field? That thing is only used seven or eight times a year as it is. I'm sure the Seahawks and the Huskies could work something out if they had to.

Posted by catalina vel-duray | January 26, 2008 8:36 AM

Gitai, you have a lot more faith in big-university sports accounting than I do. Any halfway-decent sports accountant can show exactly as much profit or loss as his employer wants, while still falling well within GAAP.

Universities are supposed to be places of education, not pro sports. Period.
