You Slog Commenters Are Lucky

posted by on December 4 at 14:08 PM

Over in Wisconsin, if you make a comment on a blog that someone objects to, the blog administrator will give your IP address to the police and the police will arrest you. Yes, the comment was hateful and stupid. But there are hateful, stupid comments on Slog all day long, and you don’t see us arresting you. Yet!

(Thanks, Travis.)

for someone to be arrested over that is ridiculous. you'd think even on the lowest level a police officer could tell it wasn't a threat. i mean, forgetting the fact that it was sarcastic, even on face value saying you admire the columbine shooters isn't a threat. is it?

I TOTALLY think the Stranger should do that. It would funny to see Dan Savage get arrested!

The blogger describes what happened here. Also the full comments of the teacher are given. The blogger says this, which I think rightly sums it up:

"It appears to me that the commenter is attempting to do one of two things. Option 1: the commenter is a right wing whack job that isn’t violent, but likes to engage in outlandish rhetoric. Option 2: the commenter is a liberal who is trying to discredit conservatives by acting like option 1."

Since the guy was a former teachers union leader, I think Option 2 is the most likely. Crazy stuff...

The inability of most people to recognize sarcasm on the internet has finally taken its first victim.

It wasn't even particularly hateful and stupid. It was pretty much par for the course on the web. I've certainly been threatened much more explicitly on dozens of occasions.

One of the things that always freaks me out about incidents like this is that there is this enormous silent majority of Americans who a) can't recognize a joke and b) honestly believe people who make jokes like that should be held criminally liable in any case.

Cops are often part of this silent majority and what I really live in fear of is being handcuffed and taken into custody by some former high school linebacker with a split level rambler in the suburbs and an IQ of a 105, and then having the prosecutors have to pretend to take the whole thing seriously to avoid alienating the policeman's union.

the blog owner is all, "i didn't think they'd arrest him..." nice... just hand the information over to the government, it's not your fault what they do with it.

Yeah, sarcasm doesn't really work in print.

And 105 is an above-average IQ.

Yes, but that average includes people with Down's Syndrome and autism spectrum disorders.

I already figured that my Slog posts have pretty much killed off any chance at local elective office for me. At least they've killed the Stranger endorsement.

Its not like the guy committed thoughtcrime or anything, is it? And anyway, I thought the reason everyone was supposed to hate America was because of all your freedoms. What gives?

The Will in Seattle v. Me discussion yesterday... lolz. I couldn't imagine what would happen if the PoPo's came to my door over that... oh my!

Dumb red states.
