Not sure I get what you mean. What he says about Muslims is about as vague as what he says about the Lutherans.
It doesn't look like he singled out Muslims any differently. Are you reading something into it that's not there, perhaps?
Do they have frequent praying cards?
"The ancient, wacky traditions of the Jews!" I agree, he's definitely damning them ALL with faint praise.
Huh, no mention of the Buddhists. Or the Hindus for that matter. I guess they don't fit quite as neatly into his little theory.
... and, of course, the athiests, for, you know, doing nothing.
I love how the excessive lavishness of the Catholic church and its ceremonies was one of the things that pissed Protestants off for hundreds of years, yet nowadays it seems like the default compliment.
The frequent praying thing is a common compliment from Christians towards Muslims. It's like, "Well... at least they are dedicated." Most US Christians only pray at dinner time, on Sundays, or when they're trying not to look at porn.
that speech was so gross.
...and the atheists, for your clear and rational thought processes and refusal to see the world in absolutes.
What an ass he is. And what asses we the people are for allowing Presidential campaigns to reach this low point.
If Mitt really thought every religion had something to offer he'd become a Unitarian.
The whole speech was insulting to atheists. God granted us liberty? WTF, every primarily religious political theorist tries to limit freedom.
well, i don't think every time a religious person opens their mouth they are insulting atheists or agnostics. if you have a view that says any one thing is true, right, or good, then it is also saying something is false, wrong, or bad, respectively.
he didn't (and probably shouldn't) have to make such a big deal about his faith, and the role he believes god plays. but i don't think he has to provide disclaimers each time either. he doesn't have to say each faith is valid, or no faith.
because, basically, he's in a lose lose lose situation here on slog, were he even to keep his mouth closed!
and it is mostly because he is GOP, and for his political views, NOT his religious views.
right? i mean, which complaint here is because he's mormon? none? whereas ALL the religious accusations can be leveled against EVERY other candidate. fortunately for them, however, they do not need to make as big of issue out of it because they are not of a faith that has yet to be elected to the white house.
Mitt Romney getting a fair shake on SLOG - no going to happen.
Mitt Romney a leading contender for President - yes.
The fact that he headed into this topic at all is amazing and shows character and a pit bull player for the race.
You all sound so silly, as if you think he is trying to convince you.
I am an agnostic and find nothing in the Mormon church much worse that the hundreds of other story lines. But, I have know many Mormon families and they seem to be the finest people on the block. It may not be my path for life or many of the SLOG posters, but as churches go, seems to work very well.
They don't do Kool Aid, talk good health practices, and are devoted.
Mormon trashing is so dated, about 1850 I think, when they were driven from the mid west for being anti - slave. The slave trade feared their power in three states as the pre civil war stuff was foaming.
I am gay and resent their homophobia, but would note their men sleep with men quite willingly. Go figure.
...and the wearing of the secret underwear by the Mormons and Sikhs....
I don't think Sikh underwear is secret. They just don't talk about it.
The underwear is one piece, shoulder to knee, rayon and very silky, and great for winter.
The funny, one of my scores had washed his garments with red and so he was wearing a pink silky secret one piecer. He was one very sexy fellow with a big hard on sticking out.
There has not yet been a Lutheran president, either. Garrison Keillor for president!!!
