Don't they get a discount for buying a bar after the noise regulations were just passed?

It should be for $250,000.

The Comet was always my fave place to be a drunk Santa in.

I thought the Blue Moon was the oldest bar in Seattle. Certainly has the oldest aging hippies inhabiting it.

And here I thought it was Jules Maes???

I thought it was the Triangle adjacent to the viaduct and the Seahawks stadium.

There are lots of "oldest bars", because they're all dating from Repeal. I think the REAL oldest is Jules Mae's. The oldest restaurant is the Merchant's Cafe.

Double Header goes WAAAAAAAAAAAAAY back, certainly the oldest gay friendly bar.

Remember that Seattle had a working waterfront into the 1060's.... sailors and other hard party types plus loggers ....

Remember that Seattle had a working waterfront into the 1060's....

Little known fact: the decline of Seattle's working waterfront was triggered by the Norman invasion of England.

Yeah we all played the William the Conqueror card - problem is, not much else happened in the 1060s to use as a punch line.

#3, I think Jules Mae's WOULD be, but I don't think it's current location is its original. Plus, Georgetown was a city, not annexed into Seattle until 1910-11, so they may be out on a technicality. I'm sure it was a pretty awesome place to hang after Seattle Indian's games.

The Central is older too, but I'm not sure if it's been "continuously operated" or not.

Well this sucks if it is really true that the Comet is for sale.

Maybe I am paranoid but all of this seems a bit to coincidental considering that has happened in the course of a week (showbox sold to a huge corporation, crocodile closing, noise ordinance passing...).

The Mayor and City Clowns are idiots.

Like the Croc, the dilapidated building the Comet rents in (apartments above "uninhabitable," says the County) has been owned for a long time by a crabby, quirky landlord.

Like the Croc, the County Assessor values the building the Comet rents in at $1,000 while the land is over a million.

I like the Comet better than I ever liked the Crocodile Cafe. For reals. The Comet has those disgusting wooden tables, and that charmingly tiny stage... They should book more hiphop, then maybe they could stay open.

it's not really a hiphop bar though. or indie, or dance. it's a trashy rock bar.

You know, we call them Normans, but they're really Danes.

Wish they'd brought Danish cookies ...

Posted by Will in Seattle | December 18, 2007 4:00 PM

Well, people were understandably confused because they all spoke French. It wasn't until later we realized they had Danish accents.

Although it turns 74 in April, the Blue Moon is not the city's oldest bar. I was always told it was the Triangle but I could be wrong.

Amusing typos @6 aside, Seattle still has a working waterfront, just not directly in front of downtown anymore.

@22 :( I saw a hiphop show there once and it fucking rocked my face off. Maybe that's because it was the Nite Owls, and they ALWAYS rock my face off.

The Normans were not Danes, and they did not speak French. They were for the most part indigenous Bretons, and they spoke Norman.

I can see the press release now: Introducing "OddFellows South", the new development that will be the companion to the critically acclaimed "OddFellows Studios"! These brand new luxury condos will be crafted for the new urban hipster, and will make the renovation of the historic OddFellows Hall on the north end of the block possible. Oh. Sorry, got the Franks and the Normans confused. My bad.

It was the Franks who were Danish invaders of France. The Normans were ... wait ... no, they were also Vikings originally.

Now I'm going to have to go read one of those cool history books I have at home ... thanks a lot, Fnarf!

And, wasn't the Canterbury Tales written around that time as well?

Nothing going on ... sure.

Posted by Will in Seattle | December 18, 2007 4:56 PM

The original Norman invaders were Norse, but by 1066 that was just a memory. The people were indigenous. Not everybody is a king.

The Canterbury Tales were three hundred years later.

so... wait. is it not weird that the ad says "do not talk to employees" in huge bold letters?

Posted by citrus | December 18, 2007 6:03 PM

I guess Will is just getting the Normans (invaded 1066) confused with earlier Danish settlers and attempted conquerors. In the centuries leading up to the Norman conquest, the Danes managed to seize much of England at various times, although never Wessex.

I am still trying to work out why we must not talk to the employees.

Are they all man and nasty or do the spit when they reply?

Why???

"Are they all mean and nasty or do they spit when they reply?"

When I moved here two years ago from Manhattan everyone in Seattle was going on and on about The Comet. I don't get it.

I wish the Comet would close and a real bar would open up. I prefer a place that offers goat cheese crustini, and some hand crafted organic Meads. The Comet is the type of "Old Seattle" place that needs to be bulldozed so real urban living can spread throughout Capital Hill.

Jules Mae was closed for several years. They only reopened a few years back.

And I agree that the Double Header is probably older.

But the big question is what will happen to Basic Plumbing?

Jules Maes is in it's original, old location - but it sat empty for quite a while before being bought and thoroughly (and nicely)renovated...
