Early HIV Prevention Strategies

posted by on November 7 at 12:45 PM

Today’s New York Times has an interesting story in the national section about gay and lesbian Muslims that have migrated to the US from Iran, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Palestine, and Turkey. They don’t have it easy back home, of course, thanks to their the Koran, murderously homophobic regimes in Iran and Saudi Arabia, and only slightly less murderously homophobic cultures in other Islamic countries, and adjusting to gay life in the US can be a culture shock. Still, it’s better than a stoning, an honor killing, a hanging, or a public beheading.

And what accounts for Islam’s hostility to homosexuality? Why, early HIV prevention efforts.

Hostility is rooted in the Koranic story of Lot, which parallels the biblical Sodom and Gomorrah. At Al-Tawhid Mosque in San Francisco, the imam, Hassan al-Jalal, a Yemeni with a short beard, printed a sheaf of Koranic verses that he said condemned homosexuals.

“This is the main sin in Islam,” Mr. Jalal said, describing how the town housing Lot’s tribe was lifted high into the sky and then dropped, killing all in the town before they were buried under what is now the Dead Sea. “He sent the flood to clean the earth from AIDS. There were no doctors at that time, but God knew they had a virus.”

All sects mandate capital punishment, he argued, although others differ. “Sunni, Shiite, they all agree that they have to be killed. But who does it? Not me or you, only by law.”

Want to avoid being killed by law? Stay out of the showers!

Muslim clerics reject being gay as biologically coded and advise anyone with homosexual stirrings to avoid temptation. They see America as rife with it given practices like open gym showers.

The first thing that I can recall that made my dick go hard was Pierce Brosnan in Goldeneye, swimming in the pool.

When he wasn't fucking every woman he sees, shooting/killing every bad guy who gets in his way, 007 was making me gay.

Open gym showers were a disappointment for me. Young guys are so boring.

Open gym showers are very tempting indeed, but luckily the balance tips back the other way for most people, because all of our women have visible wrists and ankles. Now that's fucking hot!

The interesting thing that most people don't realize is that Saudi Arabia is not just a Mecca for people to travel to, it is where HIV and TB and other diseases are spread.

nevermind the fact that HIV in iran is primarily spread through injection drug use. nope, it's all about the locker rooms and the guys scrubbing their sweaty balls in full view. mmmm.... delicious, salty, sweaty balls.

I have yet to ever taste salty sweaty balls. And thank God. When you invite somebody over for dinner, you clean your fucking table.

Isn't it nice that the retarded have books they can study that makes them feel important? Whether it be the bible, the koran or the talmud, there's something for everyone. If they're lucky, they can get similarly stupid people to give them money, so they never have to do any real work!

It tells you a lot about their mindset, that they actually think that just one sight of a hot naked guy scrubbing his works will turn a supposedly straight guy permanently gay. "Avoid temptation"? I mean, come on, no gay guy I know has ever been turned straight by the sight of a nekkid woman, however hot - but it works infallibly the other way around? If your eyes are ever assaulted by another male's naked hotness, you have no choice but to immediately fall to your knees, is that how it works?

The NYT just doesn't get it. Gay identification is a western concept. There's nothing remarkable about an Arab man fucking another guy, even though Islam tells them it's wrong. They should read Joseph Massad's Desiring Arabs. Apparently Foucault had a similar idea in The History of Sexuality.

@7

I like your resonse. It makes me laugh.

Maybe they should institute gay showers, it will help make more men gay and help keep their polygamy thing going. Then they don't have to fight as many wars to get rid of all the young men.

Flawless.

@7,

I wonder about religious leaders who make that argument. I guess they have a really narrow worldview where, since they are struggling so much with that temptation, all "other" straight men must struggle with it too.

reads just as great if you change the quotations.

Those guys don't turn gay in the shower. Their stances just get wider.

Clearly they have not been to many open gym showers. The dudes I see at the UW rec center shower, mostly old hairy men, arouse many feelings in me, but none of them are sexual.

Do Islamic bigots know that American bigots look at their culture and think they're the ones being turned gay by all the men holding hands and kissing hello and goodbye?

America has open gym showers?

I'm so going!

Making being gay into the ultimate sin in your religion is the absolute ultimate example of 'protesting too much' that I have ever heard of.

So, um, the takeaway from this is to avoid gym showers if there are Muslim clerics around???
