Arts Sigur Ros: Not Good at Interviews
posted by October 12 at 14:44 PM
onNPR tried to interview Icelandic group Sigur Ros… it went really poorly. Apparently singing in a made-up language has not done wonders for their actual communication skills.
Sample dialog from the video:
NPR: “Is this… Do you think gonna be going forward beyond how you lyrically want to approach music? Or do you ever think you’ll start to use more standard words?”
Sigur Ros guy: “Uh… I don’t know.” *long long pause*
I can’t tell if it’s the interviewer’s fault or the band’s fault. The questions weren’t that great but can’t these dudes get excited about their music and talk about it? The reason they’re doing interviews in the first place is to promote their documentary video coming out soon. But if it’s one giant long pause, like this interview, I’m not going to be running out to spend money on it…
Maybe Sigur Ros is secretly and silently opposing Tom Rasmussen in the City Council race.

Expecting musicians to be great interviewees is like expecting baseball players to be outstanding photographers. It's possible, but not very likely; they've been selected for their music, not their talking.
Also, they are not native English speakers, are they?
"I don't know" is as succinct and honest as anyone can answer such a bullshit and heady question.
Hey, keep the music on Line Out! Slog is reserved for the real, genius-worthy arts only!
Eric is spunky today.
I agree with Fnarf 100%. Musicians shouldn't be giving interviews anyway... their contribution to society is music, not their life stories.

Or their moron political opinions.
Sounds like some sour poopy pants here.
Wow, them some fighting words Carollani. While I don't think we should expect musicians (esp those who don't speak English that well) to be the most brilliant interviewees, it seems a little much to suggest that no musicians should give interviews ever.
I think they were just too busy fucking alien dolphins.
I consider Sigur Ros' music to be one long pause.
their publicist called and requested this interview, so they should be ready to answer a few questions and not act like pathetic pretentious fuckballs.
Thanks for posting about this . . . I was told all about it last night, and completely forgot about it today. Would've made good Lineout material, but you scooped us!
Aww jeah. I scooped someone.
