I Scream, You Scream

posted by on October 5 at 15:11 PM

Is it ever too cold for ice cream? The local ice-cream-makers known as Epicurean Empire say nay. They may be found exclusively at the Ballard Sunday Farmers Market.

People have been crying out for pumpkin ice cream, and we’ve made it for the people. We got some nice pumpkins at the market, roasted them, put them in our awesome brown sugar batter with toasted Holmquist hazelnuts, and added a pinch of true cinnamon. Fall’s here. And it’s pretty delicious.

This week’s flavors:

Ice Creams:
• Roast Pumpkin with Hazelnuts
Brown Sugar Peach
• Brown Sugar
• Cacao Nib with Choco Swirl

Sorbets:
Carrot Habanero
• Concord Grape
• Peach

Washington and Oregon are the largest producers of hazelnuts (also known as filberts) in North America. Click here for nuttrends, the official publication of The Hazelnut Council. It’s the summer issue. nuttrends: Fall’s here—Epicurean Empire says so.

My grandmother used to call filberts "nigger-toes". Honest to God.... Scary huh?

Carrot Habanero!?! I could see those forces teaming up for a salsa. But an ice cream incarnation? Wow. I'd like to try it.

My father did the same but they were Brazil nuts, not hazelnuts. As for the ice cream, peach is my favorite and I never thought of the idea of brown sugar...it sounds delicious. I'm really curious about the carrot habanero. Anybody tried it?

That Pumpkin Ice Cream sounds dreamy. It is never too cold for ice cream. My first job was at an ice cream parlor in Anchorage, AK. The busiest days were the days with the most snow. I always assumed it was because people looked around at all of the new snow and saw ice cream everywhere. The place I worked had a "random fact" sign up that said Alakans eat the most ice cream in the US. That was back in 1991, don't know if it is still true but I think it proves it is never too cold for ice cream!

Can we cut out the rampant bold face, pretty please?

I love anything pumpkin but really don't like hazelnuts all that much.

My (very racist) Aunt used to call Brazil nuts "nigger toes" too. grrr!

Roasted marshmallow ice cream is where it's at.

Oh my God, I want this so bad. Pumpkin flavored anything is a weakness of mine.

It's never too cold for ice cream as long as the ice cream's soft. Frozen solid ice cream sucks -- in any kind of weather.

Theno's Dairy on Redmond-Woodinville Road has pumpkin ice cream too - without hazelnuts (which I hate).

They also do cantaloupe ice cream in summer. And Midnight all year 'round. :)

I love pumpkin and ice cream and hazelnuts, but I went to the Ballard Market today to get mushrooms from the forager guy there. Tis the time for that, too.
