Warmth, Giant Black Toobs no. 4 Is On

Until about 20 minutes ago, there was some question whether the fourth installment of Susan Robb’s toobs—written about Jen Graves last month here—was going to happen today. (The piece is solar-powered. Gotta have sun.)

Robb just made the call: There is enough sun. It’s on. It’ll be up at Volunteer Park from noon to 6 pm today. It’s free. Pack a picnic.

I'd like to see that. Unfortunately, I'm stuck at work until 5.

Oh, good tip. How come you guys get all the cool calls? It's windy today. The toobs will really be dancing.

Oh, man. That's brilliant. Those tubes are wonderful.

Sooo I just returned... they are AWESOME! Susan the artist is really personable too, she broke it all down for me and pointed out who all was there (her entire posse, basically, including one of the guys who owns Tavolata...!). The clouds/sun made for a good show, because the tubes would flatten and rise again like it was their own will and their own timing. Those tubes are pretty endearing.

yes it was great and my son loved it.

that said, too bad there was a guy there telling people, especially every kid he saw, "do not touch the pieces."

it felt like we were at the downtown sculpture park all of a sudden and that totally bummed me out.

meanwhile there were various photographers, videographers and other lie-abouts in the middle of the tubes letting the things bob off their bodies.

i know it' gauche to say, but it looked better in the video without the smoking hipsters laying all around it.

Yeah, the "don't touch" stuff made sense (the toobs are just garbage bag-like plastic, after all), but they were overzealous. One moved in the wind and HIT ME and I was told not to touch the toobs. Uh, thanks, guys. I was laying on the ground and as I am not a ninja, I couldn't get out of the way in time.

Still, a great sculpture. So fun to see in person.
