The Stranger’s guide to Bumbershoot is online now. This year we’ve got a nifty configurable schedule—check off the acts you want to catch and print your own personalized must-see list. You can also read our take on just about every band, comic, author, and performing artist playing the festival.
This year’s lineup is gem-studded and jam-packed. The things we think you shouldn’t miss are marked with lime-green stars.
Staff-pick highlights:
Brendan Kiley is stoked on the sketch-comedy duo The Cody Rivers Show and Rude Mechanicals from Austin. He’s also really hoping that the usually awesome People’s Republic of Komedy guys can deliver at all six(!) of their shows.
Megan Seling is anticipating a bunch of things, most of all the Seaweed reunion and the comedy trio Stella (David Wain, Michael Showalter, and Michael Ian Black).
Paul Constant likes the country-gospel sounds of the Watson Twins.
Jonathan Zwickel points us to the folk-pop fusion of the Avett Brothers.
Eric Grandy is for sure going to see Wu-Tang Clan and Art Brut.
Ari Spool recommends the 33 1/3 reading and listening party.
Annie Wagner is looking forward to the short films of Miranda July.
And I’m recommending two Gypsy-punk mayhem-makers, Gogol Bordello and DeVotchKa.
Also note: Advance single-day tickets are $5 cheaper now through Friday; prices go up on Saturday, August 18. Get them at bumbershoot.org or at select Starbucks locations.

But Gogol Bordello and DeVotchKa are at practically the same time! Which makes no sense at all!
id rather not give $ to payroll a festival that thinks that gymn class heroes is considered music.
I just saw Cody Rivers in Minneapolis. They were so good, I almost fell out of my chair. They were also attractive, even though they were wearing old lady wigs
I can't wait to not go to Bumbershoot again this year.
I've never been, and for no reason. I have just never been. And I used to live two blocks from Seattle Center.
Sorry, there isn't a god-damn reason for me to go. The only things I'm at all tempted by I can catch more conveniently and cheaply at local shows, or are bound by tradition to be a big waste of time. Tempting local bands: Bloodhag, for one, but I can see them anytime. Waste of Time: The wu-tang, who are missing a powerful element of their ol' dirty soul, and have a history of NOT SHOWING UP for concerts PEOPLE PAID FOR. And because you got your Ghostface, Raekwon, Inspecta Deck, etc, they won't give you your money back when Method Man, RZA, GZA, etc. are enjoying cartoons at the hotel too much to bother with the show.
Fuck that noise.
Oh boo-fucking-hoo!
I've been ejoying Bumbershoot for all three days almost every year since 1997. I love it. The only problem is that Bumberhill, the beloved yet unofficial and off-grounds beer garden is no more. Mostly. :/
See Devotchka. Saw them at the Crocodile about two years back and it was one of the best things I've ever seen. Second encore was an instrumental Black Sabbath jam (with Tuba?!) and my eyes nearly fell out.
You're right CC- maybe I'd enjoy heat stroke and massive crowds more if I was alcoholic.
I'm with christopher. . .skipping it.
Hardly any bigger names on the bill. Mostly local stuff or little groups I never heard of.
I remember seeing some good shows there in the past. . .Bonnie Rait and Pearl Jam, etc.
Also the price keeps going up and up - totally sucks, sucks, sucks.
Used to be you could buy one ticket then get your arm stamped to go in and out. Don't wash the stamp off and go again the next day. One ticket and go all days was the way to do it for me.
This year I hear the tickets are for each individual day. The ticket will say Saturday so you can't use it Sunday.
Plus it's to the point there are too many dang festivals anymore. . .all the same food booths, the same bands and same things over and over.
Stella cancelled.
DeVotchka's live show rules! I saw them at Spiegeltent and can't believe that I am lucky enough to be in Seattle for work right around Bumbershoot, too. Gogol Bordello is a little less musically engaging for me comparatively, (not that they don't put on a great show) but my heart definitely belongs to DeVotchka.
