They're concerned about the effect on their families too, particularly since as recently as three months ago, I never heard gunshots in my neighborhood. Very true. The difference is access to power. With more white people in the neighborhood, the shootings have a higher profile. They are more likely to be reported for one since a lot of white people don't get the fact that if they call the cops, any old person of color on the street is apt to be harrased (if not inaccuratley incarcerated) when they show up.

No one should have to live around violence. But, the answer cannot be displacement if we are to pretend to have any semblence of community. Most of those kids on the corner grew up in the neighboorhood and have just as much right to it, if not more than anyone else. Also, research the neighborhood before you move into it. And please don't come in and try to shut down the businesses that have been there forever-sustaining the community.

Want to end the violence? Fund education so that low income and people of color have more options besides hustling. Remember, they are kids too.
