Would be interesting to do this for other things as well. For example, I remember the Kerry quote during the 2004 campaign about how Missouri's military commitment was bigger than Great Britain's. If the military were divided between states on the basis of enlistments by state or something, would Texas have bigger armed forces than Russia?

It just shows the unequal amount of wealth and consumption concentrated in one country.
For a state with 6 million people to have as large a GDP as a country with 71 million people is a pretty good thing, IMO.

@5 Someone did a map of larger economies. I can't find it now, but China would cover the West Coast, Japan took the entire Midwest and the Northeast, Germany got the Mid-Atlantic states, and UK was the South.
