Today The Stranger Suggests…

Come of a Preacher Man

(AMERICAN HERO) Two years ago, Ted Haggard was a powerful Colorado evangelist and religious right activist who had the ear of George W. Bush. That was before Mike Jones, a gay escort who had sex with Haggard and bought him crystal meth, outed the right-wing pastor as a world-class hypocrite. Jones wrote a book about his experience, I Had to Say Something, and Stranger editor Dan Savage interviews him at Re-bar. (Re-bar, 1114 Howell St, 233-9873. 8 pm, free, 21+.) ERICA C. BARNETT

and…

Heather McHugh

(GREATNESS) Heather McHugh is a goat-cheese crouton. She is the star around which the rest of UW orbits. There is no good way to describe her because she is constantly improving your powers to describe things. The stuff she says between poems is so funny you don’t know what to do. This afternoon, she reads from old stuff, new stuff, black-and-blue stuff. Take a long lunch, become suddenly ill—whatever you have to do. (Henry Art Gallery Auditorium, 15th Ave NE and NE 41st St, 543-2280. 2 pm, free.) CHRISTOPHER FRIZZELLE

Hmmm, I am going to get bitched out for saying this but that is why we usually do not use out real e-mail addresses or names. First, let me say Mike Jones is a total hero for bringing down someone who can only be described evil and hateful. And I thank Mike Jones for doing that!!!! YEAH!!!!

Okay, here is the other side of the coin. I have read his book cover to cover and really thought he tried too hard to paint himself as the perfect son to the point where I really started to no longer buy it by the last third of the book. It was just too over done and self preachy after awhile. And honestly, I really had a problem with one scene where after Ted H. leaves his apartment Mike strips off the sheets, punches a wall and in the melo-dramatic scene of all time yells in agony of the hypocracy Ted H. represents.

Again, I thank Mike Jones for what he did but I can not help thinking that his book is also an effort of a 50 year old former male escort trying to make some justification for his life. I think I will go to hear Mike out tonight and maybe my mind will change. We will see.
