Holy Crap

God knows there’s an infinite number of allegedly Christian beliefs worth mocking. But rarely do they achieve the tabloid shock of the recent edicts put forth by Egyptian Muslims:

The breast-feeding fatwa declared that the Islamic restriction on unmarried men and women being together could be lifted at work if the woman breast-fed her male colleagues five times, to establish family ties.

According to the New York Times, the edicts “have proved a source of national embarrassment in Egypt, not least because they were issued by representatives of the highest religious authorities in the land.”

“We were very angered when we heard about the Danish cartoons concerning our prophet,” wrote Galal Amin, a professor at the American University in Cairo, in Cairo’s daily newspaper. “However, these two fatwas are harming our Islamic religion and our prophet more than the cartoons.”

why is that all of a sudden embarrassing? there are a lot of things they do that can be considered such. as long as any religion is debating, arguing and 2nd guessing its precepts and beliefs it will never "take over the world" as so many want to do.

Atiyah was suspended from his job and within days issued a retraction, saying it was a "bad interpretation of a particular case."

Looks like another one of those cases where bad facts make bad fatwa.

Last week Dan published a couple instances of teachers using their position to either "punish" or "reward" students by having them fulfill what was obviously a fantasy of the teacher ("All right, now pour on the chocolate.") For some reason, this fatwa brings to mind those examples...

You have to admire the specificity of the Fatwa - *five times*, not four, not six. What happens between the first and the fifth time though. Are suckles one to four somehow a little bit dirty and then redeemed by number five? Once the first suckle happens is the woman then bound to countinue through the fifth? Is the woman's husband allowed to object? (I presume she is married because an unmarried lactating woman would, I presume, be stoned.)
