Rumors about who’s running for city council have started flying over the last few days. I’m on the phones trying to track down which ones are legit and which ones are fake; in the meantime, however, here are a few of the names I’ve heard as possible candidates in the past few days:
1. KCTS host Enrique Cerna, who has reportedly talked to consultant Cathy Allen;
2. Former monorail board member Jim Nobles;
3. Democratic Party veteran Noel Frame (who, at 27, would be the youngest candidate in any race);
4. State Rep. and perennial rumored council contender Phyllis Kenney;
5. Longtime civic gadfly and Historylink founder Walt Crowley;
6. City employee and political junkie Tim Durkan, who sought the open seat formerly held by Jim Compton; and
7. King County disease intervention specialist Carrie Shriver.
Of those, only Shriver has declared her intent to run (she’s seeking the seat that Peter Steinbrueck will vacate next year). More details and clarifications as they emerge.
Eggs, cheese and bacon, I hope youre wrong about Cerna. What a goof ball. Im sure the Dems would love him and he will raise tons of bucks, the guy is always the MC at all the non profit dinners, and he will sell that as his "community" activism. Unfortunately, he will probably win. This town loves goofy safe mainstream media types.
Compton, Godden, Mike James ( ok he lost but still raised loads of cash) and Mona Lee was our Hillary.
Jim Nobles is a good guy, and is one of the few Republicans I know who actually rides the bus.
If it's a choice between some uninspiring, "identity" politics type or Jim, I'd pick Jim.
I love Walt Crowley. I dunno if he should be on the Council, but at least he knows what "Seattle" means. Cranky old guys rule.
Sadly, Walt recently lost his voice. This is a big handicap in a City that trouble listening as it is.
Um, Noelle Frame? Who?
oh, and @3, thanks for saying who you were - I get griefed by State Legs when you post and they think it's me.
Noelle Frame is, as the post mentioned, a local dem party operative; she's smart as all hell and one of the best-organized and 'together' people I've ever met. She was critical in running much of the evidence-gathering during the whole gubernatorial 2004 recount debacle, and, in my humble opinion, would make a fantastic council member (it needs a young person's voice, even if she's no nightclubbing hellraiser) if people could overlook her age (which, I think, could be easy).
It's spelled Noel and she's bomb diggity.
True dat. Noel is ridiculously productive. It's kind of scary.

I'm flattered to be mentioned in this context, and it is true that I have been encouraged to consider standing for election. I am still recovering from recent surgery and would need a clean bill of health to even entertain the notion (many other factors must also be weighed). Re the loss of my larynx, far from being a handicap, it has made me a better listener and prevents me from shooting from the lip, which are not a bad attributes. On the other hand, a "gadfly" is a creature that irritates cattle; this may not be the best qualification for success in electoral politics.

As I've said elsewhere -- Jim Nobles is the guy for this job. He's smart, articulate, and has been doing yeoman's work in social services for years. Glad he's in the race!
