Did anyone see/read this little speech given by Lincoln Davis during the Marriage Ban hearing? Choice excerpts:

"I think we should expand the scope of the amendment to outlaw divorce in this country. Going further Mr. Speaker, I believe in fidelity. Adultery is an evil that threatens the marriage and the heart of every marriage, which is commitment. How can we as a country allow adulterers to go unpunished and continue to make a mockery of marriage?...
.... this is why I think the amendment should outlaw adultery and make it a felony...
....We should also prevent those who commit adultery, or get a divorce, from running for office...
....If we want those watching on CSPAN to actually believe we are serious about protecting marriage, then we should go after the other major threats to the institution. "

Take heed, straights... The American Taliban is at it again!

GBM - that's incredible, and I thought you were just making another cynical joke until I followed the link.

Next he'll be calling for arranged marriages, and marrying off our daughters at puberty.

Did anyone who followed the link to the CNN article about the heat wave notice the picture of Greg and Rhonda Newby, the morbidly obese Wichita couple mopping themselves down with sweat towels?

Hint to morbidly obese middle-Americans: maybe if you lost weight you wouldn't be so fucking hot and sweaty.

P.S. It's ok, I can make fun of fat people because I am one myself. But not as fat and sweaty as Greg and Rhonda Newby, because I fucking exercise.

Well, if he can keep Newt Gingrich from moving into the Oval Office, maybe he's got something.

Hey, I just had an epiphany after my last post.

Our consumer/car/air conditioned culture leads to lazy fat sweaty people and global warming...

...which leads to heat waves...

...which eventually kill off all us fat sweaty people, reducing consumption, cars and air condition, and lowering global green house gas emissions.

Ta daaa! Natural selection and planetary regulation, all in one!

Mr. Davis is definitely employing the use of sarcasm and a highly advanced wit to point out the ridiculousness of this bill, and kudos to him.

I don't know Davis well enough to know if he is being sarcastic (which would be great) or if he is another Repug blowhard pontificating morality. Any insight Sloggers?

I agree with Rep. Davis. I'd like to see Reagan's name and his legacy erased from the history books. The divorced creep never should have been allowed to run for public office.

Mike, see my link with his voting history. He is actually a Dem, but it seems in name only. He is in Tennessee, after all. I think he might well be serious.

Ha, I do hope for Tennessee's sake that he's being ironic. His "No" vote suggests he is, but the speech itself is at least half serious.

I think his position makes sense. I don't agree with him, but it's completely un-hypocritical for a "values" representative to support the extension of those values ALL THE WAY, rather than just far enough to reach the right-wing-kook voters. Marriage is a positive value. What IS hypocritical is a bunch of Republican dickwads who don't seriously give a shit either way, but think they can pick up some easy votes with some easy but trivial anti-gay posturing. Davis is bringing some REAL conservatism to the debate here, and gay-marriage advocates should be (somewhat) grateful.

Levislade: I followed the voting record link. Some Dem! He an Lieberman should get together.

Geez, I've been re-reading and re-watching this thing to get at his intent. Upon rereading, I agree with Fnarf...I think I'm now in the he's-showing-up-a-hypocritical-Congress camp. He's half serious as he believes what he is putting forward. However, he's putting infidelity, divorce, and child abuse forward as real detriments to marriage to expose the hypocrisy of conservative Congresspersons. They freely sample these marriage-destructive activites yet they single out gay marriage as the greatest threat. These shills are only doing it for November votes and Davis is calling them on it.

The only thing I have to say about the Sonics going bye bye:

Nah Nah Nah Nah
Nah Nah Nah Nah
Hey Hey Hey
Goodbye!
