New York Times Cuts Paper Size, Jobs

Posted by on July 18 at 14:32 PM

In what looks like another blow to the beleagured US print media, the Times announced yesterday that it’s reducing the width of its papers by an inch and a half (making it the same size as USA Today) and closing a printing plant in New Jersey, cutting its production staff by about a third (to about 550) and saving around $42 million a year. Shrinking the paper would reduce the total space for news in the Times by 11 percent; Times editors say they plans to add pages to make up for about half that loss. The Wall Street Journal, meanwhile, said it would follow in the NYT’s footsteps early next year.

Blow to the print industry, my ass. They're saving magabucks. It's a blow to the union workers, that's all. The newspaper biz is doing about the same as they have for the past twenty years or so.

If there's one thing I like about USA Today it's the dimensions of the print edition. I felt that way about the Star-Ledger when I lived in New Jersey. Much more convenient for opening and reading in a confined space like a bus, train or at lunch.

I agree that the job losses are a hit to those who are directly affected...but I'm not sure how this is a major hit to the print media. I see it as progress.

Layoffs? NAFTA's fault.
