The Mayor Wants Your Opinions on Hiphop

Posted by on June 14 at 11:11 AM

That’s right, today Mayor Greg Nickels announced that the Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs is accepting nominations for the fifth annual Mayor’s Award for Excellence in Hip Hop. According to the official press release:

“The award acknowledges and honors innovative performance, community service and entrepreneurial achievement by locally based members of the hip-hop community whose work has had significant impact in Seattle. Nominations are open to the public and all are invited to nominate a favorite performer (solo/group), B-boys/B-girls, visual artist, DJ, MC, media/journalist, publication, promoter, record label, Hip Hop Pioneer or Unsung Hero. An independent panel will determine the categories and number of award recipients based on the nominations received.”

Applications are due by Friday Aug 4, and can be found here.

David, you are a gentleman for posting postitive news about the Mayor. I have started my stopwatch and expect the unalplegic (paralyzed from the neck up) urchins of the news dept to attack this effort as a thinly veiled assault on the monorail in less than five minutes.

I nominate the Fresh Prince.
I nominate Al Jolsen.
I nominate Amos & Andy.
Thank you.

I nominate Common Market because you can totally tell that guy Is extremely wise and knows everything and deserves to shake the mayor's hand.

Hip Hop Rules!

I nominate the divorce 'cause they got the most votes overall in the seattle weekly music awards thingy ...

What about the Z-bois and Gender queers?

OK. Now I know that the City of Seattle has ample tax revenue and is tending to the all the important issues facing our citizens. I will now vote against all bonds and levies with a clear conscience.

maple, are you implying that any government involvment in the arts is a sign of fiscal irresposibility and should be avoided like black death? and should punished by voting down school/fire levies?

please ellaborate.

I'm for:

$ for scholarships to art students.
$ for public art.
$ for performing arts.

But not for a music genre. Common:

Mayor's Award for Excellence in Hip Hop
Mayor's Award for Excellence in R&B
Mayor's Award for Excellence in Country

when will it end?

Sounds nice but it's dilly and dally stuff that eats our paid bureaucrat’s time and such recognition its already more than adequately handled by the entertainment industry.

Greg Nickels is about as in touch with hip hop as Benjamin Franklin.

He's not in touch so they shouldn't recognize the skill that lies in this City?! Seattle has hip hop talent known WORLD wide. That's enough reason to show appreciation.

Why should the Mayor give out an award for something he doesn't understand? How about the city instead?

Yeah, maybe the mayor himself doesn't know anything about hiphop, but I know some of his staff does, and that's all that counts.

Public Enemy and Chuck D
Kool Kieth
K.R.S. 1
Ice Cube
nuff said. Nothing beats the production in any of these artists releases.
2 pac is great too and he always rocked the mike, but the beats and rythms were always stale.Might as well rap to a chainsaw when I hear it.
Puts some P- funk in it when you rap.

oh were talking Seattle ,my bad
well I nominate Sir Mixalot who else.
Since 1984 him and Nast ness rodriguez put Seattle on the map for hip hop and that was before Swass and Big Buts.
I'm talkin 'Lets G' and 'My love my beats"
and the grewates rap show mixes- remeber 1250 KFOX my friends.those were the days. sorry I'm old shool.

WTF!

I just can't wait 'till next year when Nickels will be up for the first annual Grandmaster Flash's Award for Excellence in Mayorship...

so it's silly and absurd. but is it bad necessarily?

blue scholars. hands down.

I don't care in all honesty who they name it after. I just find it funny that the Mayor, who probably knows jack shit about hip hop, is giving out a hip hop award.

I nominate Cornel West
