Democratic Fusillade

Posted by on May 4 at 17:15 PM

I’m not sure why all of this happened in one day, but the Darcy Burner campaign and national Democrats today put out four separate hits on eastside Republican Congressman Dave Reichert — in less than eight hours.

All of the hits are interesting, and here they come, in reverse chronological order:

3:55 pm: The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, in a press release, slams Reichert for voting today against a House amendment that “would have guaranteed 100% scanning and sealing of America-bound cargo” — a complaint that just added to the growing list of complaints Democrats have about Reichert’s moves on port security (other complaints include Reichert’s vote against $825 million for port security in March and his vote against blocking the Dubai Ports deal, also in March).

2:18 pm: The DCCC announces that its attack web site, www.gopauctionhouse.org, has named Reichert as its “GOP Crony of the Week.”

10:30 am: Congressman Rahm Emanuel, who chairs the DCCC, joins a conference call with Burner and a number of reporters from Seattle and D.C. to talk about rising gas prices, the country’s “energy crisis,” and Reichert’s vote to give tax breaks to oil companies (the oil and gas industry has given Reichert $40,000 in contributions since 2004).

“We should have a hybdrid-based energy policy,” Emanuel says. “Darcy, in my view, represents the new policies that we should have.” (Burner drives a hybrid SUV and today released a plan to “invest in energy independence.” [See 8:46 am.])

8:46 am: Burner calls for repealing the $14 billion in tax breaks and subsidies for oil and gas companies that the Republican-controlled Congress has approved (with the help of Reichert). She calls for meaningful legislation against energy price gouging, increasing incentives for the purchase and production of alternative-fuel vehicles, and investments in new technology.

“Dave Reichert has endorsed the Bush energy policies that have failed the consumers of Washington,” said Burner. “He voted for the Bush energy bill that gave billions to the oil industry and failed to make investments that would reduce our addiction to oil. Reichert stands with Bush and big oil — I will stand with the consumers of Washington State.”

Like I said, I’m not sure why all of this happened in one day, but whatever the reason, it does seem to indicate that the Democrats are focused on this race and are prepared to hit Reichert hard, early, and often.

Whoa. The stuff the DCCC has posted about Reichert on their gopauctionhouse.org site is pretty damning.

Good old fashioned smear politics. It's time for a chan-

...oh wait.

Well, you can't really say the last one is a timing thing. I mean the vote happened today, when should the party be sending out press releases? The D-Trip web site is nothing new, although the Crony of the Week is. It highlights something that's been there for a while. And the first two were probably related.

Why NOT put out four hit pieces in one day if they'll just get relayed for free on a blog?

When the voters hear the whole truth about Reichert's voting record, he will be less popular than David Irons on Mother's Day.

This is a change, Gomez—Dems fighting like hell to take power. It's a welcome fucking change.

Nice post Feit, that was like a shot of election geek adrenaline. I don't vote in the 8th, but i just warmed up the check book.

Um, but they fought like hell in 2004....

Gomez, maybe you can explain how attacking someone's record is "smear politics"?

I mean, if the Burner campaign were going around asking Reichert if he stopped beating his wife yet, you might have a point. But she's not and her attacks have been confined to the job he's doing. That is what campaigns are all about.

Media blackout. Although C-SPAN did broadcast the April 29 event live and rebroadcast its coverage in its entirety directly following the end of the dinner (around midnight), I think it is important to note that C-SPAN did, in fact, abridge its coverage of the event in later rebroadcasts. For example, on May 30, I watched the C-SPAN rebroadcast -- it was a 25-minute segment of the event from 7:35-8 p.m. It featured approximately 10 minutes of footage of guests entering the event, followed by the full 15-minute Bush-Bush's Twin routine. Colbert's monologue and video presentation were not included in C-SPAN's next-day, prime-time rebroadcast. I can't ever recall a second airing of a C-SPAN program that was edited so extensively as to omit one-half of the event.

Nuclear energy, fuel for the vehicles of the future.no more oil. Reactivate Nuclear power plants whoohooo. cant drill in alaska. No to nuclear power plants. We'll pull fuel energy of the future out of our ass. Whats it going to be big words or more bipartisanship?
What it going to be?

I believe this timing can be explained by Reichert's ability to add two successful amendments to a House port security bill yesterday.

He's bringing $2.4 billion over the next 6 years into the Ports of Seattle and Tacoma for security purposes (training and communications). He can sell this in November as both a homeland security and local economic issue.

I wanna see Reichert go away, too. But it ain't going to be easy!

Aexia, that is the pure definition of smear politics: attacking a person's record, decisions, choices and lifestyle.

The definition doesn't change just because YOUR person is using the tactics.

"Democrats are focused...and are prepared to hit Reichert hard, early, and often".

Guess the democrats just need to continue their policy of vote early and often...it would be easier for you to do, and it actually works in this state.

pablo and gomez, standard bearers for the 32 percent deadenders.

like we'd believe you. Go buy a vowel.

LOL the 'You're a Republican If You Don't Agree With Me' fallacy.

Smear politics is smear politics. Darcy Burner is sinking to Reichert's level.

So criticism is "smear politics"? Let me guess, it's "unpatriotic" too, especially in a time of war?

Pointing out what a crap job Reichert and other Republicans are doing only emboldens the terrorists, right?

And LOL to 'If you don't agree with me then you're a terrorism fear-monger.'

Smear politics is the usage of accusations, honest or dishonest, to discredit your opponent. You can call it criticism if you wish. The motive is the same: to attack your opponent's credibility.

Again, the rules and definitions don't change just because it's your guy or girl using the tactics.
