Yesterday, with Greg Nickels

Posted by on April 26 at 9:16 AM

While that armed, ex-speed-using kid was going about what would be his last day on earth—on the one-month anniversary of the Capitol Hill massacre, no less—Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels was in NYC, joining mayors from fourteen other U.S. cities at a summit aimed at getting guns off city streets.

The Associated Press reports that the 15 mayors agreed on a six-point statement of principles in combatting gun violence, including opposition to federal efforts to restrict the cities’ right “to access, use and share trace data that is so essential to effective enforcement, or to interfere with the ability of the (ATF) to combat illegal gun trafficking.” “If the leadership won’t come from Congress or from the White House, it will have to come from us,” said New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who led the summit with Boston Mayor Thomas Menino.

(Of course the NRA had something to say, dismissing the summit as “a taxpayer-funded publicity stunt.”)

Is this a sinister plot to deceive? How can this fat assed, not rad chic, homeboy mundane Mayor have any leadership on this issue on top of Global Warming? Christ oh mighty, what can the anit-Nickels hacks dream up to say to discredit this? The timing with a horrible good old handgun shooting - who planned that?

How can it be? Erica, Josh, tell us the real truth?

This cannot be leadership, political savy, and the exact will of Sattle residents and citizens expressed again by the duly elected Mayor?

God, the sky is falling. This is no way cool Nick or Peter --- a political hijack conspiricay of the fat and not rad chic. Seatte body politic is doomed.

Next, oh God no, he will find the money for the tunnel.

and then by devine intervention a shower of gold will rain forth from the heavens and the monorail will finally materialize.

Jake, could you possibly be more sarcastic?

I think the Stranger has been pretty even handed with Mayor Nickels. They endorsed him when he ran for mayor. Twice. They call him on the carpet when he does stuff they don't like (kill the monorail, the big dig tunnel, etc), and they praise him when they agree with him (killing the teen dance ordinance, gun control, Kyoto, etc).

You may disagree with some of their criticisms of the mayor, but it is unfair to say that they demonize him at every turn.

Payback is certianly a bitch for the NRA. They helped block Bloomberg's girlfriend from a position on the FDIC because they hate the fact that New York was able to reduce it's crime rate in part by dealing with guns or something. So yeah, imagine mayors getting together to solve a problem. That's much worse than taxpayers funding an illegal war. Or taxpayers funding domestic spying. No mayors talking is the real problem in this country. Good thinking NRA!
