Pelz to Reichert: Return DeLay’s Dollars

Posted by on April 4 at 16:47 PM

According to local Democrats, Dave Reichert, the Republican Congressman from the eastside, has accepted $20,000 in “tainted” money from disgraced former House Majority Leader Tom Delay, who announced yesterday that he is leaving Congress.

Now Dwight Pelz, the chairman of the Washington State Democrats, is urging Reichert to give the money back. Here’s an excerpt from the strongly-worded press release:

“People have given back campaign contributions from super-lobbyist Jack Abramoff, and people should give back their dirty DeLay dollars, especially Dave Reichert,” said Pelz. “This money is all part of the same Republican culture of corruption, and it’s wrong for Reichert to hold onto it.

Pelz noted that Reichert has accepted $20,000 in tainted money from Tom DeLay and his political action committees, and that Reichert has voted with DeLay 97 percent of the time.

“Tom DeLay is a crook and he’s doled out thousands of dollars in crooked cash,” said Pelz. “Dave Reichert should do the right thing, denounce Tom DeLay and give back this dirty money.”

Despite all scandals, indictments and today’s announcement that DeLay won’t run for reelection, Reichert still hasn’t returned the money he accepted from DeLay and his PAC.

From his tenure as King County Sheriff to his time now as a member of Congress, Dave Reichert has repeatedly demonstrated a pattern of turning a blind eye to bad behavior,” said Pelz. “Tom DeLay’s downfall should cause Reichert to take a good look at his own prospects for reelection this November. The people of the 8th district want honest leadership and reform, not Republican yes-men who take tainted money from the likes of DeLay.

Uh....Hasn't Sen Patty Murray kept Abramoff's money?

Patty Murray has taken zero Abramoff dollars.

Raw Data: Patty Murray and other dems. got money from Indian tribes that were clients of Abramoff (and not necessarily at the same time that they made the contributions). Very different from getting money directly *from* Abramoff. Only republicans were direct recipients of Abramoff money. Of course republicans try encourage the confusion.

i think even clean money is dirty these days. some is just dirtier than most.

ZERO Dems got Abramoff money. Zero. Not one. Not a single Democrat ever got so much as a penny from Abramoff. The tribal money that Murray and others got represents a large REDUCTION in tribal contributions to Dems starting at the time they began using Abramoff.

But didn't Abramoff direct the Indians to give the funds? I guess I'm not sure if it makes much difference if Murray got the money from the tribes directly or from Abramoff as it was at Abramoff's direction. No?

In any case, I think that asking a pol (or anyone) to return money is silly, though obviously a nice publicity stunt. But as some religious leader is supposed to have stated: "The more money I take from the devil, the more I can do to fight him."

Just out of curiosity, does The Stranger refuse to take money from certain categories of advertisers?

I've never been confronted with the problem of assessing the morality of the people who give me money, as I don't get any.

Raw Data: Well the tribes were clients of Murrays' before and after they were Abrimoff clients. So I'm not sure you can even say conclusively that the contributions were at the direction of Abramoff. I do draw a distinction between taking money from an Abramoff client and taking money from the man himself...but I'd agree that pretty much all money in politics is dirty -- it's just a matter of degree.

Whoops, I meant to write the tribes were contributors to Murray, not clients of

Yes, Abramoff directed the tribes to give the Dems MUCH LESS MONEY THAN THEY GAVE BEFORE.

Just a suspicion...but i think FNARF is a freaked-out Republican!

Right on Dwight Pelz! You are on point on this one. Kepp it up!

If you're in the Darcy Burner camp, why encourage Reichert to give the money back? Let him keep it and use it against Reichert to portray him as a tool of corrupt republican interests.

Gene: WTF? I mean, what the freaking fuck?

Can you read? Did you read my posts at all?

What is it about my mentioning that Jack Abramoff, well-known Republican convicted sleazebag, gave his sleazebag donations to Republicans and ONLY Republicans, despite the strenuous efforts by those Republicans to suggest otherwise, makes you think that I am a Republican? Are you stupid?

Burner will have opportunities to paint Reichert as a tool during Dick Cheney's upcoming visit to Seattle, which Reichert just got bamboozled into agreeing to attend. Every second standing next to Cheney is another thousand votes for Burner. I hope she gets pictures of them shaking hands.
