Hearing people get whacked by fast-moving trains they didn't hear coming all the time, too. Happens down by Golden Gardens on a regular basis. One scenario that causes problems is the two converging trains -- you hear the one, and turn and face it, sure that that's the one that is making all the racket, secure in the knowledge that it's on another track -- and get creamed by the one coming up behind you.

And it's the steepest of learning curves: get hit by one train, it's too late to learn how to avoid getting hit by the other one.

A friend pointed this article out earlier today and I asked, "What the hell was Miss Deaf Texas doing out in the middle of nowhere near train tracks? You'd think that winning a pageant would hook her up so she didn't have to do that."

The train tracks are not too far from the School for the Deaf in Austin. However, some people are suggesting that it was suicide, because she should have been able to feel the vibrations.
