Sonic Bust

Posted by on March 4 at 14:50 PM

The Sonics bill is dead this year.

Gov. Gregoire just held a press conference where she said: “We need further assurance that the city and the Sonics can come to a mutually acceptable working agreement before the legislature acts.”

(Even though, the Sonics are seeking a local tax—the legislature needs to sign off on it.)

She added: “We’re committed to working with the Sonics and local government during the interim [meaning after the session ends] to bring a package forward that both the legislature and the public can support.”

At the press conference she was asked if the votes had been there to support the Sonics package.
She said: “No.”

I wonder if the Sonics gaffe—hosting a Ken Hutcherson event last night—didn’t peel off at least 4 votes in Olympia yesterday.

Anyway, now that the Sonics have failed the last two sessions in a row, you think they might get the idea that the bailout model isn’t going to work?

This is hot shit. Thanks for the update Josh. This really puts the City in a better future negotiating space as the Sonic's bluff has been called. They have lost the power to rush this through without close scrutiny. Seattle and Washington State, led by Nick Licata and a lot of citizens, won. We stood up to prosports. I am proud of Seattle. Let's hope there are no politicians that will fuck this up.

Well, there isn't much the Mayor's office can't screw up, so I'll keep the bubbly on ice until Thursday (I've been down this road for three stadiums - if you count Key Arena, and I do - already...)

No it doesn't mean that the Sonics will give up.
Would you walk away from a free $200 million?

Boycott Starbucks!

A bunch of Democratic PCOs got together and made some noise to try to persuade our Democratic Governor not to get in bed with the Sonics. Well this is what the Gov had to say in aftermath:

"The last thing we want to do today is rush something through the Legislature and get a 'no' vote and have the Sonics think that's some sort of message," Gregoire said. "The best way to do it is to have the deal done and take it to the Legislature and give the Sonics the right answer that they're looking for."

Give them the answer they are looking for? Is that what we expect out of our leaders? Getting the answer the Sonics want. I thought they were supposed to get the answer that WE want.

It looks like the fight isn't over. The sad news is that we have some elected officials who see the process as some kind of slot machine they are obligated to bust open for the Sonics.
