Given all the Slog talk about newspapers this week, thought I’d post a bit of newspaper news that I missed yetserday: The McClatchy Company says it will be holding on to its new 49.5 percent share of The Seattle Times Company, for now.
Hmmmm. Knight Ridder once was a was a long term hold em type of company, however recently their stockholders heavily pressured the board to increase shareholder value. On the other hand, McClatchy has always been a hold em for the long term type of company, and they are buying in a down market as far as the newspaper industry is concerned. I would guess they are are going to wait out the Blethen-Hearst fight. Right now, my money would be on Hearst to win.
I wonder if anyone is making book on it. I tried to place a bet on the Super Bowel with my local bookie, however when I telephoned his house
his wife answered and informed me he had just passed away. A quick check of the obits confirmed he had passed on to the front rail at the big track.
Someone suggested making an offshore bet on the computer, but honestly, I can't really support this sending jobs overseas thing.
