Bumbershoot on Line Out

posted by on September 2 at 2:34 PM

Monotonix by Blush Photo

A lot happened at Bumbershoot this weekend, and as usual Line Out was all over it:

Throw Me The Statue debuted a new song.

Grynch held down the Fisher Green stage.

The Walkmen and Estelle underwhelmed, competently.

Man Man made a new fan (fan) out of me; Saul Williams made Black Nationalists out of a bunch of white folks.

Darando made up some new words for old desires.

!!! threw a rave on the Fisher Green.

TI brought heat, summoned smoke, and blew the crowd away.

Lee "Scratch" Perry put the "dub" in dubious mental health.

Upright Citizen's Brigade and Human Giant begged the question, Is facebook is too edgy for improv comdey?

The Weakerthans renewed my faith in having my faith renewed.

These Arms Are Snakes and Brother Ali looked great, sounded like a "big bassy fart."

The Saturday Knights cooked a hot rock out out of the Fleet Foxes "White Winter Hymnal."

The Black Keys struggled with the size of Memorial Stadium.

Stone Temple Pilots reminded me how much I hated every minute of my life in 1993.

Monotonix rocked too hard, got shut down after 14 mintues.

Battles bent the Space Needle to their own vision of the future; Dan Deacon passed out the bug juice.

Two Gallants gallantly entertained on an afternoon lawn.

Superchunk just ruled.

Black Eyes and Neckties played KEXP and no one got hurt.

Death Cab For Cutie drove me home.

Flatstock moved Megan Seling.

And that's just what we have so far...

Eurovision 2008 Party! Let's make it happen Seattle!

posted by on May 18 at 8:54 PM

For those of you just joining this conversation, our intrepid Stranger European Bureau reporter, Griet Verlinde, has just finished reviewing ALL 43 contestants in this years Eurovision Song Contest. You can read Griet's great reviews with her years of insight and wit by going to this special Eurovision link.

Who will win? Will it be the Russian with the mullet? Will it be the sassy Grecian goddess with her bevy of gay guys shaking their booties behind her? Will it be the Pirates? Will Serbia take the title for the second year in a row? Or will a puppet of a squawking turkey from Ireland take it all?!?!?!

OMG! I can't wait to find out!

The final is on Friday the 24th on BBC 1. Is there a bar in town that can get that on satellite? Is there one willing to host this? Will we be able to watch Terry Wogan in his amazing wig being cunning as ever as he introduces each act?

C'mon Seattle! Let's party Eurovision-style!

If You're Not Reading Line Out...

...you're missing out on Griet Verlinde's completely comprehensive, completely hysterical coverage of Eurovision. What the hell is Eurovision? Griet's first post explains it all for you. And yesterday's post not only included this little bit of recent European history...

Montenegro split back in 2006. When a boyband from Montenegro won the national preselection (over a “qualitatively better” Serbian song) rumours of tactical nationalistic voting arose. Serbia & Montenegro then withdrew from the contest, only to split a month later. Not-Eurovision-Queens would claim that the withdrawal was one of the effects of the growing Serbian and Montenegrin nationalism, but they’re wrong. Obviously.

...but this unforgettable performance:
