Say it Ain’t So, Joe!

posted by on October 16 at 9:15 AM

Poor Joe the Plumber. Not only is Obama out to wreck his hypothetical small business, but Joe also lacks a plumber’s license, has a questionable voter registration, and is facing a tax lien against his home. Can’t a hard-working American catch a break on the day he gets to hold his own news conference?

If McCain were to get into office the government would eat poor Joe alive.

Republicans are all about woulda coulda shoulda. "Oh, I WOULD go out and become a big shot business owner and create all kinds of jobs, but I'm afraid of going into a higher tax bracket. I could be somebody, but I worry about the SOCIALISM!" Such whiners. Such a stream of excuses.

Is anything ever your own fault when you're a Republican?

Posted by elenchos | October 16, 2008 9:23 AM

joe, my good buddy, HA!

plus, should he hypothetically make over 250K, his taxes would increase $30/$1000.

thirty bucks. that's just dinner for 2 @ cracker barrel, you stupid buckeye fuck.

Posted by max solomon | October 16, 2008 9:26 AM

And I thought it was enough that he wanted to grab what he could and keep it for himself while expecting others to pay for a war, a military occupation, record debt and generally keeping the country alive and kicking.

But these new facts really add to his credentials as a Republican!

Funny thing: "Joe the Plumber" and "Obama kisses white woman" (see earlier Slog post) happened on the same day and just a few feet apart, according to my friend who was there (and is the kissee's husband). Will all our election memes come from the same neighborhood in Toledo?

Posted by Erik | October 16, 2008 9:31 AM

Holy Jeebus, if the McCainanites can't vet a VP candidate or a debate gimmick, what kind of judges and cabinet officials would they offer us?

Heckuva job, McCranky.

So that brings the press conference to:

Joe the Plumber: 1
Sarah Palin: 0

Posted by Mac | October 16, 2008 9:39 AM

If you happen to RtFA, Joe doesn't need a plumber's license as a plumber's employee, and the only thing "questionable" about his voter registration is a typo (Worzelbacher vs. Wurzelbacher).  The tax lien is the only valid point of criticism here.

McCain openly disses health-of-the-mother exceptions, still believes in trickle down, lacks integrity, and is willing to risk a Palin presidency for short term political benefit.  That should be plenty to work with without smearing Joe the Plumber.

Manchurian Plumber.

He is activated by the King of Hearts, Barack Obama.

Posted by AJ | October 16, 2008 9:44 AM

From Martin Eisenstadt's blog:

"Turns out that Joe Wurzelbacher from the Toledo event is a close relative of Robert Wurzelbacher of Milford, Ohio. Who’s Robert Wurzelbacher? Only Charles Keating’s son-in-law and the former senior vice president of American Continental, the parent company of the infamous Lincoln Savings and Loan. The now retired elder Wurzelbacher is also a major contributor to Republican causes giving well over $10,000 in the last few years."

I don't care about Joe the Plumber. I didn't care about him during the debate, and I don't care about him today in the wake of the debate. Joe the Plumber should pull up his pants and get back to work.

is everyone else getting tired of the shaved-head-with-a-goatee look?

Posted by max solomon | October 16, 2008 9:45 AM

Obama really shouldn't have said "spread the wealth around". That's not a framing that anyone appreciates. Maybe something equally vapid about everyone having to pay a share.

Posted by daniel | October 16, 2008 9:49 AM

@7. and the funny thing is, Joe the Plumber did a pretty good job with this press conference. He was probably more articulate than Palin would have been.

Posted by Julie in Chicago | October 16, 2008 9:50 AM

Julie @14, I was pretty impressed with the press conference, right up until 2:09 when he finally takes the bait and launches into a wingnut manifesto.  He had seemed surprisingly rational up to that point.

Posted by lostboy | October 16, 2008 9:56 AM

I don't know why, but everytime I see this guy he reminds me of Woody Harrelson's character of Sgt. Schumann in 'Wag The Dog' - anyone else get that vibe?

Posted by ReverendZ | October 16, 2008 9:58 AM

What "Joe" really does, as anyone who has read "Grand New Party" understands, is expose the fact that for many "working class" people...well, they are actually well to do.

Hardworking craftspeople and laborers can bring in 6 figure incomes. Families with dads, moms, sons and daughters in small businesses as well.

Going on about taxing people in these brackets doesn't sit well with these people who will vote for Palin.

Posted by John Bailo | October 16, 2008 9:58 AM

This guy is Jeff Gannon, right? He's just put on a few pounds.

Posted by Jim Demetre | October 16, 2008 10:13 AM

Bailo @ 17:

So maybe Joe makes six figures. So what? If he makes $100K, under Obama's plan he doesn't pay additional taxes. If he makes $150K, he doesn't pay additional taxes. If he makes $200K, he doesn't pay additional taxes. Only if he makes $250K or over -- and that's taxable income, not gross -- does he begin to pay additional taxes.

And so what if he does? Will his dick fall off or something? Did your precious little Georgie Boy worry about that when he started this obscene war?

We're about to flush you fucking conservatives down the shitter, Bailo. How long can you tread water?

Posted by ivan | October 16, 2008 10:22 AM

I have a very powerful toilet, Ivan. He's not going to be able to tread water; he's going to have to hold his breath. And try not to touch anything solid on the way down.

Posted by Fnarf | October 16, 2008 10:30 AM

Couldn't you just have stopped after your first paragraph?

Posted by John Bailo | October 16, 2008 10:39 AM

@12 - Look, man, some of us are BALD, okay? And my wife likes the goatee.

Posted by thelyamhound | October 16, 2008 11:01 AM

Obviously, he's drunk the Kool-Aid.

Posted by Bauhaus | October 16, 2008 11:48 AM

He's not sorry for the illegal activity on the part of his government? For the killing of the innocents? For the supporting of tyrants? Well that's telling innit?

Posted by Sargon Bighorn | October 16, 2008 12:37 PM

How the hell is "Joe the Plumber" the symbol of lowest common denominator American undecideds? $650 for an hours work and $40 of pipe? We should be asking unemployed "Joe Banker" and "Joe Designer" the tough questions.

Posted by Dougsf | October 16, 2008 1:10 PM

give me a fucking break. the monkey wrench on his shirt is RED

Posted by 4f...sake | October 16, 2008 2:28 PM

All hail Obama. Our saviour. Our God. Death to he who questions the great one. Death!

Posted by savedbyOBL | October 16, 2008 3:27 PM

A LOT of people think like this.

Keep that in mind.

Posted by gk | October 16, 2008 4:38 PM

Joe the Plumber is gunning for an acting gig. He's pretty modest and first thing that comes to his mind is Matt Damon. I'm pretty sure, @8, if he's a "plumber's employee" then he's not a business owner and won't be making that magical $250,000.

And regardless, any subcontractor, independent, employed in any way kind of person who is making that kind of money NET (not gross) should be in a higher tax bracket. I don't care if you knit booties until your fingers are stumps.

Posted by karen | October 17, 2008 12:37 AM

Boy, you Obama supporters really show your immaturity. Leave Joe the Plumber alone, he has enough problems.

It's really very strange to me how you Attack anyone who disagrees with Obama. You sound like little children fighting over a toy. A reminder, Joe the Plumber was at an Obama Rally and merely asked a question of Obama.

He does have a plumber's license, that's a fact and he does have a $1200 tax lien on his home. What crime has he committed. Are you Obamba supporters all pure. Simple I will agree with, BUT PURE?????????????

He has not supported either candidate. At least get your facts straight before you start running off at the mouth.

Posted by Gloria | October 17, 2008 9:07 AM

Most of these people sound like Matt Damon and Pamela
Anderson. No apparent intellect.

Posted by mary | October 17, 2008 4:06 PM

I LOVE Matt Damon
