I just adore the contrast of critisizing the use of the word "fatigues" as being outdated while calling you "Long-Haired".

Posted by Sean | October 29, 2008 10:49 AM

Uh, David? They are no longer called BDUs. They are called ACUs. As in, Army Combat Uniform. You might want to try some immodium for your diarrhea of the mouth.

Posted by Old Mama Chips | October 29, 2008 10:53 AM

I'm pro-draft. All volunteer army is the worst idea this country has had.

And yes, I am pro-draft for females too.

How do you manage to spell "Spangenthal-Lee" correctly, and then misspell "Jonah"? I guess weird things happen when people's fingers outrun their brains.

Think for a moment of a city by the bay where a Military Recruiter is forbidden to “recruit” at any public function.

Why the quotation marks around "recruit"? Do Military Recruiters not, you know, recruit people?

When a letter starts with "Liberalism is thriving in the" you know it's going to be good.

Posted by w7ngman | October 29, 2008 10:59 AM

thank you for pointing out the "sudo-college students" part.. that was one of my favorite little nuggets in there, too!

getting past the awesome spelling, though, what does that really mean? i just can't quite crack it... they (whoever this imagined "they" is) aren't really college students?

I am pro national service -- NO EXCEPTIONS SO TO INCLUDE THE GET OF THE RICH -- two years

Take your pick of many community service/national service options, military is one of them.

Don't let David sour your opinion of Tacomans.

Posted by Sir Learnsalot | October 29, 2008 11:04 AM

Mr. Sudo sounds sycotic.

Posted by Superfrankenstein | October 29, 2008 11:09 AM

That guy makes no sense.

But I have my own psycho babble my friends call me on ... we agree to disagree and laugh it off.

It's not fair to assume that ALL Seattlites have long hair and hate the military. I mean look at your staff born again gay pseudo-conservative, Dan Savage. Sometimes his pro-family pro-war stance sends chills down my spine.

But the world would be no run if we agreed all the time.

i like johan spangenthal-lee. or johan sebastian-lee.

i'm getting a t-shirt that says 'seattle-hippie-commie freak'. who's with me?

Posted by scary tyler moore | October 29, 2008 11:14 AM

hey now. literacy is the last refuge of the elite. if we did not take into serious consideration the opinions of every ignoramus able to mash keys on a computer, well, it doesn't matter because they aren't reading this.

Posted by diggum | October 29, 2008 11:14 AM

While the David E. letter was a bit crass and full of grammatical errors, I think he's onto something. The woman in the article cites "The City Council passed a resolution against the Iraq War" as a reason to oppose any sort of military presence in Seattle. I'm pretty sure the Iraq war was authorized by congress and the President and not something those uniformed evil-doers decided to do on a whim. Your far-left leanings are showing, Seattle, are you trying to be San Francisco II or something?

Posted by LT Nixon | October 29, 2008 11:18 AM

LOL @ building bongs! the cool kids are building vaporizers!

Posted by timmah! | October 29, 2008 11:24 AM

@8 - I've been telling my friends this for years, and they all think I'm some kind of fucking republican hawk.

Everybody does boot camp and weapons training. Then they can choose to spend the next 2 years in the military, the red cross, ameri-corps, congressional intern, poll worker, litter cleanup, doing chores for little old ladies, parks worker (city/state/national), or any other type of community service. After that, they can get on with their lives.

In the long term it would result in everybody learning a sense of duty to their fellow citizens. Rich kids would get smacked around in boot camp. Fat kids would get whipped into shape and start feeling good about themselves. I even think that it might even eventually lead to a decline in chronic drug addiction and homelessness. People would be more ambitious, motivated, better able to work as a team, and maybe just a little bit less selfish.

Now that I'm well past the draftable age and with no draftable children, this sounds like a GREAT idea!

I've always wondered what widescale riots in the street look like, and reinstating the draft sounds like just the ticket!

Posted by Tiktok | October 29, 2008 11:37 AM

Can boot camp be available for men AND women? I only say women, because if women are going to be social equals, they should to be empowered accordingly. And well, learn that life isn't always glamorous and now how to get gritty when it needs to happen. That NOBODY is above shit work.

Honestly, boot camp seems to be the only attractive thing about the military. The worst thing about the military are the people that are in it ...

People defend it all day to say it makes stronger, more motivated people, etc. etc. The first person who comes to my head? My uncle, Navy, total pscyho and lives Wasilla Alaska where he is living his dream. Getting paid to do nothing.

The second would be grandfather. One of the angriest, most racist, and judgemental guy ever. (He turned ok in the end btw)

Let's also talk about rape can we? All these upstanding wonderful men that the military produces, RAPING THE SHIT OUT of the enlisted women .

Explain this one to me. Perhaps a bunch of sexually frustrated, repressed men, who feel they are entitled to a woman's body?

It's not totally innocent.

Posted by formerly OR Matt | October 29, 2008 11:37 AM

@3 Although I don't completely agree with you on universal military draft I do think we should have a mandatory 2 year public service corps in which military service would an option. Draftees would either opt for the military or for social programs like teaching or public health or infrastructure work such as forest fire fighting or public works, for example.

In return for your work you get a stipend, housing and financial aid to further your education at college or vo-ed institutions which receive federal and state funding.

Posted by inkweary | October 29, 2008 11:38 AM

Maybe he was working unix command-line at the same time he was composing this letter and got confused.

C:\>sudo college students studying
C:\>sudo periodic rambling
C:\>sudo get hate-mail

Posted by j.lee | October 29, 2008 11:40 AM

If he thinks we have to go to college to solve simple logic puzzles, that would explain the letter.

Posted by Mike in Renton | October 29, 2008 11:44 AM

David E. sounds like a troll.

I doubt he's even from Tacoma. Spanaway, maybe.

Posted by TacomaRoma | October 29, 2008 11:51 AM

David E. is channeling J. Edgar Hoover and his rants about "swaydo"-intellectuals.

As someone said about Hoover, "When your face looks like a bulldog's butt, the cutest frock can only do so much."

Posted by rob | October 29, 2008 12:02 PM

Sorry @13, but I'm too busy for such frivolities. Besides running a "duck-and-cover" drill this afternoon, I have to see if I can find some place to fix my 8-transistor portable AM/FM radio, otherwise, I'm going to have to just listen to my Jefferson Airplane album on the 8-track instead.

Oh, and speaking of clothing, you should check out the totally groovy bell-bottoms I picked up yesterday - they'll go great with my huaraches and the fringed suede vest I was planning to wear to the big "Impeach Nixon" rally this afternoon in Red Square!

Is "sudo-college" like Sudoku? Because people freaking love Sudoku.

Posted by Abby | October 29, 2008 12:17 PM

Maybe he really means sumo-college students, but sumo colleges in Seattle? Who knew?

Posted by onewink3 | October 29, 2008 12:43 PM

Hey, I learned to use sudo in college. Well, technically on co-op.

Posted by K | October 29, 2008 1:10 PM

Ok, I amend to 2 year service, as listed above.

But still, in times of war there should be a draft for anyone who decides to not go into the military. That provision would be needed because the minute we start bombing, then everyone will flee the military and, again, it will be all volunteer.

I also agree with the bootcamp mandatory thing. Seriously, it would be a positive thing.

Posted by Original Monique | October 29, 2008 1:30 PM

@21: Aw crap, you beat me to it.

Posted by Greg | October 29, 2008 2:38 PM

@29 Monique - I'm totally with you. If there were a draft you would be calling on a most likely fitter, pre-trained citizenry.

Pre-deployment boot camp would merely be a refresher for most people. Our drafted combat forces would be better trained and better prepared for an engagement. Since everybody, even politicians, would have been through boot camp they would have a better idea of the value of service required of the troops. And, since everybody can be called up, you wouldn't see things like the current exploitation of poor minorities on behalf of the rich elites sending them off to die in conflicts that only benefit monied interests that currently exists in our military/political system. Those senators and representatives would think twice about launching a war to secure the revenues of oil companies if it were their sons and daughters being shipped off to die for the purpose of padding a balance sheet.

Erica, at least Mr. E spelled 'Taliban' and 'Al-Qaeda' correctly.

He's a man who knows his enemies, not the least of which is the Seattle Hippy-Commie-Freak community. I prefer to be called Liberal Latte-Lovin' Loafer, thank you very much.

Let's hope David sleeps with his guns & ammo close by for that moment when we storm his bedroom to spread his wealth around.

Posted by blackhook | October 29, 2008 3:47 PM

Erica, I think you're showing your own ignorance.

"sudo-college students" are college sutdents who like to sudo-wrestle. As you may not be aware, sudo-wrestling is a very popular sport in certain oriental parts of the world.

Posted by blackhook | October 29, 2008 3:58 PM

most people just called them combats.

only a supply REMF would use the other words.
