“Mocked, yeah, I guess that’s the word. Yeah.”

Katie Couric asks Sarah Palin how being able to see Russia from Alaska translates into “foreign policy experience.” Holy crap.

And that's change we can believe in!!!

Well, once I got past the ad for minty medication, it was interesting to see Ms. Palin essentially draw a blank, actually saying "I don't know" before recovering somewhat.

I think I saw her ordering a White Chocolate Mocha Frapp @ my alderwood mall starbucks this morning.

Oh wait, it was another Soccer Mom...

Posted by stuck in lynnwood. | September 25, 2008 12:11 PM

You guys are such dicks for mocking her.

She totally didn't mean that being close to Russia was her only foreign policy experience -- as she clearly explained, Putin flew over her house. And she had to have the executive experience to make sure people, like, kept an eye on that. How often has Putin flown over your houses? Huh? How qualified are you guys to keep an eye on Putin?

Posted by lolo | September 25, 2008 12:11 PM

I'm sorry. This woman has no business being on the ticket. At all. It's disrespectful to this nation to have her up there as VP.

How can people vote for a ticket with her on it? She's an utter disaster.

Posted by Balt-O-Matt | September 25, 2008 12:12 PM

Could someone kindly tell me what the question was and Sarah's answer? I am at work and can't get the sounds. :) Thanks!

Posted by ballardg | September 25, 2008 12:13 PM

I'm not the first person to say this, but she sounds exactly like a high school student trying to bullshit the teacher into thinking she did the assigned reading, when it's totally obvious that she didn't.

Posted by S. Ben Melhuish | September 25, 2008 12:13 PM

Putin? I thought it was Medvedev now.

Posted by sockpuppet | September 25, 2008 12:14 PM

Even as I guffaw, I wince, knowing that there's a sadly large portion of the country who finds this ENDEARING and a reason to vote FOR her instead of against.

It's the Stupidity, Stupid.

COURIC: You've cited Alaska's proximity to Russia as part of your foreign policy experience. What did you mean by that?

PALIN: That Alaska has a very narrow maritime border between a foreign country, Russia, and on our other side, the land-- boundary that we have with-- Canada. It-- it's funny that a comment like that was-- kind of made to-- cari-- I don't know, you know? Reporters--

PALIN: Yeah, mocked, I guess that's the word, yeah.

COURIC: Explain to me why that enhances your foreign policy credentials.

PALIN: Well, it certainly does because our-- our next door neighbors are foreign countries. They're in the state that I am the executive of. And there in Russia--

COURIC: Have you ever been involved with any negotiations, for example, with the Russians?

PALIN: We have trade missions back and forth. We-- we do-- it's very important when you consider even national security issues with Russia as Putin rears his head and comes into the air space of the United States of America, where-- where do they go? It's Alaska. It's just right over the border. It is-- from Alaska that we send those out to make sure that an eye is being kept on this very powerful nation, Russia, because they are right there. They are right next to-- to our state.

Looks like CBS is withholding the content for some reason: the youtube is here:

Posted by TValley | September 25, 2008 12:18 PM

@6 See the transcript ( Though it really doesn't capture how obviously she was stalling and evading the question.

Posted by S. Ben Melhuish | September 25, 2008 12:20 PM

I've been trying not to be mean, I really have. I mean, I've THOUGHT it, but now I just have to say it: Gov. MooseMeat is not just out of her depths, she's DUMB!!!! She's not eloquent, she's shallow as a rain puddle and she's a JOKE. Please realize this and quit. If you win and McCain dies, the USA is done for. We will have a power vacuum the likes of which has never been seen.

She makes me long for Quayle.

Posted by Al | September 25, 2008 12:20 PM

OMFG. You should see her response to Katie about the economic situation. She's babbles on about nonsense!

She makes me CrAzY with rage.

Posted by Balt-O-Matt | September 25, 2008 12:20 PM

I am now thinking that Katie Couric is kind of a badass. She knows she doesn't need to be harsh or mean, but can just ask a simple, innocent question, in a nice enough tone, and be sure to make sure Palin answers the question. Palin will dig her grave and Katie will come out smelling like roses.

Seriously, look at the three questions she asks in that exchange. Brilliant.

It might be a sad commentary on the state of our media that I am so impressed by this.

Posted by Julie in Chicago | September 25, 2008 12:25 PM

I've also had a lot of experience dealing with both Black and White Russians; I have simultaneously placed one limb each in the states of Arizona, New Mexico, Utah and Colorado; and my husband wears Russian Leather - how much more street cred do I need, you pickers of nit?

Posted by COMPARATIVELY PALIN' | September 25, 2008 12:27 PM

Holy crap this needs to be everywhere at once. Way to mangle the talking points.

Posted by Ziggity | September 25, 2008 12:31 PM

What I can't stop thinking as I watch this interview is how clear it is that Katie Couric would actually make a better VP than Sarah Palin.

Posted by Irena | September 25, 2008 12:37 PM

JMC snubbed the media, and the media are showing him what a mistake he has made.

Posted by Betsy Ross | September 25, 2008 12:48 PM

Katie is a real ball-breaker. For once in my life I like a ball-breaker.

Posted by JJ | September 25, 2008 12:48 PM

CBS has this highlight up on their Web site of Palin talking about the war in Aghanistan:

Katie Couric: Why is it much more challenging there? Can you explain that?

Sarah Palin: The logistics that we are already suggesting here, not having enough troops in the area right now. The… things like the terrain even in Afghanistan and that border between Pakistan and Afghanistan, where, you know, we believe that-- Bin Laden is-- is hiding out right now and… and is still such a leader of this terrorist movement. There… there are many more challenges there. So, again, I believe that… a surge in Afghanistan also will lead us to victory there as it has proven to have done in Iraq. And as I say, Katie, that we cannot afford to retreat, to withdraw in Iraq. That's not gonna get us any better off in Afghanistan either. And as our leaders are telling us in our military, we do need to ramp it up in Afghanistan, counting on our friends and allies to assist with us there because these terrorists who hate America, they hate what we stand for with the… the freedoms, the democracy, the… the women's rights, the tolerance, they hate what it is that we represent and our allies, too, and our friends, what they represent. If we were… were to allow a stronghold to be captured by these terrorists then the world is in even greater peril than it is today. We cannot afford to lose in Afghanistan.

Sarah Palin is Forrest Gump, and we all know how many people liked that movie. Won't somebody please ask her : "Budapest is the capital of what European country?"

Posted by Former editor | September 25, 2008 12:54 PM

@21 - Please tell us you made that up. Please?

Posted by Porkchop Sandwiches! | September 25, 2008 1:01 PM

@4. It wasn't Putin flying over her house, silly, it was Putin's HEAD.

Posted by avatar | September 25, 2008 1:02 PM

Is anyone else reminded of that miss teen usa answer awhile back? I cannot get that out of my head when I watch this interview (shudder)...

"Miss South Carolina: I personally believe that, U.S. Americans are unable to do so, because some… people out there in our nation that don’t have maps, and I believe that our education, like such, as in South Africa and Iraq, everywhere like such as, and I believe that they should… our education over here in the U.S., should help the U.S., er, should help South Africa and should help the Iraq and the Asian countries so we will be able to build up our future..."

It's like watching a car crash, with my mother-in-law in the car.

Posted by gimmeaminute | September 25, 2008 1:18 PM

I know, me too.

I cannot fucking believe that they (ie. her and the people holding her stupid, stupid puppetstrings) aren't downplaying the whole Russia comment. Seeing as how it was so profoundly ridiculous.

"No, Katie, listen, I do has relavunt experience, fer reals! This one time, I was on this like airplane or whatever, and we totally few over at least ten or more countries in a couplea few hours! Fierce, right? I PWND those bitches. Palin McCain 2008! Your security will be our totally awesome responsibility, and we are PSYCHED!"

Lol. Nice try Palin. I'm particularly amused by her trying to play up a land boundary with Canada as foreign policy experience. Something only 12 other states can say.

Posted by Karey | September 25, 2008 1:21 PM

Once again, this sort of person (Palin) appeals to roughly 50% of the voting population. She's like 50% of the voting population. She speaks, thinks, acts, prays, and processes information like 50% of the voting population. Notice the poling results given later in the day by Mr. Savage (O=46% M=46%) Scary innit it?

Posted by Sargon Bighorn | September 25, 2008 1:22 PM

Do we hear Gregoire touting her foreign policy experience?

"I am the EXECUTIVE of a state that touches Canadia all day every day, plus, Seattle and Japan swap so much fish that they are practically lesbian lovers! Therefore, I should totally have a set of nukes at my disposal."

Not so much.

Posted by violet_dagrinder | September 25, 2008 1:33 PM

Do interviewers typically give the answers to the questions they ask if the interviewee is stumped and bumbling?

Guess Katie is just giving Palin the 'deference' McCain demands.

I remember - yet again - why I don't watch CBS news...

Posted by violet_dagrinder | September 25, 2008 1:41 PM

@25 - I was thinking the exact same thing!

Posted by Charm | September 25, 2008 1:45 PM

Does anyone know if Putin has ever actually flown over Alaska? I imagine he's mostly in Moscow and thats way over on the other side of Russia. I think it would be a lot shorter of a flight to come over the Atlantic, then to fly over Siberia and the Pacific and then over North America to get to say DC.

Can anyone confirm this?

Posted by 474N | September 25, 2008 1:53 PM

But. . . WHO CARES?

Shit, Bush has actual foreign policy experience -- he has looked into Putin's soul! -- and is still an international disaster.

Experience isn't even the point. I mean, Palin is a joke in that regard, but it doesn't matter. She and McCain are a nightmare because their ideas are wrong, not because they're incapable of carrying them out.

Posted by violet_dagrinder | September 25, 2008 1:55 PM

wow! does a foreign leader flying over your state qualify as foreign policy experience? does putin's head magically appear over alaska like the face in the sun on teletubbies? i have so many questions!

Posted by kim | September 25, 2008 2:08 PM

@19 I was just thinking about that, how the only way we finally got any of our national media (and we're getting all excited about Katie Couric and The View here, guys) to crack down on these Republican disasters was just chance--John McCain decided to change his style of talking to the media and clammed up. If he was still out there charming them all with his "straight talk" they would be continuing to write fluffy puff pieces on both of them. So now it's personal vendetta, not out of any respect for, you know, the Truth. This is profoundly sad and it pisses me off.

And while I've watched these painful blunders with glee, like the rest of you, the polls are kinda saying it might be too late. The alternative, which is that America could have seen some hard questions and ridiculous answers months or weeks ago and it would have made no difference...that's honestly too much for me to take. I know there must be blogs out there linking to this video and slamming Katie for being such a bitch and so unfair to our wonderful strong Sarah. The fact that she opened her mouth and words came out after being asked a question is enough for the 50% of this country that voted for Bush.

All that said, I think we're going to win. Anyone who can possibly be undecided must make the association between McCain (Repub! current mess!) and financial ruin. People who make $250k a year are not undecided.

Posted by threnody | September 25, 2008 2:11 PM

New drinking game! Watch the video again and take a shot every time Sarah Palin says the word "Russia".

Fuck I hate that woman.

Posted by snark | September 25, 2008 2:12 PM

thanks for posting the transcripts and was as bad as I thought.

Posted by ballardg | September 25, 2008 2:14 PM

Ayden, the deference is awesome because it shows that she doesn't have any of her own thoughts and cant even tell you what the thoughts shes aping are.
