Giving a Whole New Meaning to “Drill, Baby, Drill!”

posted by on September 11 at 10:02 AM

Oil Field Girls, Jerry Bywaters, 1940.

ECB already mentioned this government/big oil corruption scandal in the morning news, but it’s worth quoting from—it sounds like an HBO miniseries waiting to be written:

As Congress prepares to debate expansion of drilling in taxpayer-owned coastal waters, the Interior Department agency that collects oil and gas royalties has been caught up in a wide-ranging ethics scandal — including allegations of financial self-dealing, accepting gifts from energy companies, cocaine use and sexual misconduct… The reports portray a dysfunctional organization that has been riddled with conflicts of interest, unprofessional behavior and a free-for-all atmosphere for much of the Bush administration’s watch.

Sock it to ‘em, New York Times.

Not only did the officials—at this federal agency which is only second to taxes in its revenue collection—accept big gifts and bribes “costing taxpayers billions,” but:

The investigation also concluded that several of the officials “frequently consumed alcohol at industry functions, had used cocaine and marijuana, and had sexual relationships with oil and gas company representatives.”

Can you see the sex scenes? Snorting drugs and humping on a board-room table? The government actually in bed with oil interests?

Drill, baby, drill!

I see sex scenes in everything. Like, that picture you put up with you and the fat cop? Sex. That's all I thought about.

This is great stuff... but... what's wrong with consuming alcohol at industry functions? That seemed like a weird one to lump in with the drugs and the sex and the gifts/bribes.

this is the greatest story of the year.

unfortunately, no one in the US will care since it is all republicans. If a democrat had gotten a blow job and denied it, he would be impeached.

I do love that this proves once and for all that the Bush Administration was literally in bed (or on a boardroom table) with Big Oil.

@2 - Federal employees have strict guidelines regarding gifts and behavior with clients, and this includes alcohol. They're not even supposed to accept a coffee mug or a ballpoint pen as a gift, much less an 8-ball.

This is a great story. I'm picturing a big barrel of oil in a hotel room, with plastic draped over everything, while the government and oil industry get sloppily lubed up while fucking each other silly.

I just saw that painting. It's in Austin.

I'm not going to Slog Happy tonight unless this song is on the jukebox.

Actually, not just sexual relations, but "inappropriate" ones. Reading from the report, page 20:

This employee stated that Smith "took the long way" between the two businesses, and during the drive, he asked to go to her nearby home, but she refused. "He wanted to have sex; I said no, " she recalled. Smith then asked if she would have oral sex with him, but she told him she did not want to. She said Smith then "basically forced [her] head into his lap," and she performed oral sex on him while he drove the car slowly. She said that she resisted Smith when he pulled her head into his lap, but Smith did not relent and continued to pull her head down. She said Smith was "real persistent" but not violent and she did not feel as though she had been sexually assaulted by Smith. She stated that it was difficult for her to have sex with Smith because he supervised her and RIK, but she "felt like [she] could get fired," so she did what Smith wanted. She said she was "scared" that if she did not do what Smith wanted her to do, it could possibly affect her employment. She said this was the only time she had ever had sex with Smith.

That's sexual assault on federal government business. That's a felony and it's not being prosecuted.

Thank heaven none of the candidates have admitted to cocaine and/or marijuana use!

They will all be able to take the moral high road here!

Gee. Great story. How come Obama isn't all over it talking about oil co. corruption GOP corruption oil co. donations to GOP etc.?

Anotehr NYT story today was informative about that gas pipeline Palin helped along. Despite a totally biased tone and set of headlines, it seems like this is the story:

N. slope has lots of gas

you need a pipelin to use it

the oil cos. already there arranged a cartel and a sweetheart deal with Gov. of Alaska Murkowsk

Palin demonizedoil cos. and Murkowski, fan against this deal, and won election

In office she opened it up to competition and undid Murkowski's deal

She got five bids from other non oil cos. including winner Transcanada

Now, Transcanada is moving along, it's a long process with lots of permitting issues in Canada and USA etc.

But the oil cos. now say they will build a competitive pipeline, too!

So.....she fought oil companis, upended their sweetheart deal, and now we have competition.

I really wouldn't try to argue she's evil or inexperienced.

The worst the biased NYT could say was (a) it's not certain it will ever be built [but duh, that's normal] and (b) some folks question some aspects of the deal [when is that ever not the case] and (c) after getting almost unan. approval in Alaska legislature they found one or two with second thoughts.

Big. Yawn.

Until someone tells me why this pipeline deal is a disaster, I think we should lay off Palin, as every day we spend attacking her, McCain's going up in the polls.

Pls. make anote of it.

And no I don't like GOP or the pro-life movement etc. etc. It's just so funny to see the crowd that normally would LOVE someone who smacks the oil companies around, do a total 180 and try to nail her on all this chicken shit stuff calling her a nazi making fun of her kids etc. etc. that no swing voters really will care about or rworse, that they seem to perceive as unfair attacks on her.

You know, CAUSING us to LOSE votes.

So clueless.

Indeed, why doesn't Obama co-opt this whole issue and propose a major speed up and expansion of the gas pipeline including retrofitting all gas stations, credit for home gas pumps to fill your car, etc. etc.?

Like, you know, *lead* 'n' stuff?

PC, haven't you been wrong, every step of the way, this entire election cycle?

Posted by elenchos | September 11, 2008 10:06 AM

Don't be mean, elenchos. PC is simply testing herself.

Posted by Mr. Poe | September 11, 2008 10:08 AM

I like how PC and mudede both write epic-length posts that take up the entire screen. Rambling posts. At least they're easy to recognize from their length. And easy to skip.

He sometimes asked for the drugs and received them in his office during work hours, the report said.

When Obama admits to buying coke on the Senate floor, then we'll talk.

Also, 95% of that article is about patronage, graft, inappropriate sexual relations, inappropriate gifts, etc. So, I think the moral high road is a pretty safe place to be on this one.

Posted by Julie in Chicago | September 11, 2008 10:30 AM

I naturally cringe from anyone being pilloried for consensual sex and/or drugs.

(Though termination is obviously appropriate for violations of work place policy.)

But they should all obviously have the book thrown at them for patronage, graft, un-consensual sexual relations and/or inappropriate gifts.

Thats the meat, the sex and drugs is just sizzle.

Will in STL said it (@12)

I haven't read beyond the blur of scrolling her for MONTHS

@7: How the fuck can a woman relate a story like that and still say she didn't feel as though she'd been sexually assaulted? FUCK.
Our culture is screwed up.

Women, if a man can't take no for an answer, he's assaulting you. Period.

Posted by Gloria | September 11, 2008 10:40 AM

I had a feeling that the euphemism sexual "misconduct" was standing in for assault and quid pro quo sexual harassment. Christ.

Posted by keshmeshi | September 11, 2008 10:40 AM

"Smith" here is guilty of the crime of rape. What the fuck? I'll bet O'Reilly's all over this story (not).

Posted by Fnarf | September 11, 2008 11:41 AM

Gloria @ 16 & Fnarf @ 18,

Yes, but it was a hetero, felony, SVU face-rape which is so routine in D.C. now that it's just added to the job descriptions.

It's gonna take barn-yard animals to get people to care these days (though probably not even then).
