Maverick Moment of the Day

posted by on August 14 at 8:45 AM

Joe Klein has a few things to say about John McCain’s willingness to stand by and watch while a new book spreads lies about Obama for political gain:

Yknow, they say politics ain’t beanbag…and it’s all in the game to tell innocent, well-intentioned people that Barack Obama is a secret Muslim or that John Kerry wasn’t really a hero in Vietnam. Or, as George W. Bush, once told a rightly outraged John McCain—whose wife and daughter Bush’s minions had smeared—“It’s just politics.”

Back in the day, John McCain was the sort of politician who would stand first in line to call out this sort of swill. (As, I’m sure Barack Obama or John Kerry would do, if some hate-crazed, money-grubbing left-winger published a book claiming that McCain had been successfully brainwashed in Vietnam—as Kerry did indeed do when a group of spurious Bush-backing Vietnam vets tried to claim exactly that about McCain during the 2000 Republican primary in South Carolina.)

And about that “putting country first” motto:

There is no excuse for what the McCain campaign is doing on the “putting America first” front. There is no way to balance it, or explain it other than as evidence of a severe character defect on the part of the candidate who allows it to be used. There is a straight up argument to be had in this election: Mcain has a vastly different view from Obama about foreign policy, taxation, health care, government action…you name it. He has lots of experience; it is always shocking to remember that this time four years ago, Barack Obama was still in the Illinois State Legislature. Apparently, though, McCain isn’t confident that conservative policies and personal experience can win, given the ruinous state of the nation after eight years of Bush. So he has made a fateful decision: he has personally impugned Obama’s patriotism and allows his surrogates to continue to do that. By doing so, he has allied himself with those who smeared him, his wife, his daughter Bridget, in 2000.

1. Ayup this is right McCain is a dirty devil. Point is, what's Obama going to do about it?

2. Maybe Obama should attack more, say McCain is in fact a dirty devil in TV ads and not just that he's a celebrity too. And de-personalize this by tying it to his Bush/McCain/GOP policies of hurting Americans, and our ideals all for power and money.

2. Obama continues downward trend in real clear electoral map -- he's ahead but on closer inxpection it's too close to call -- I think they shifted Nevada to the McCain camp (no toss up view).

This means if McCain overcomes the following teeny tiny Obama leads in 4-5 states, McCain wins the election:

Ohio (20) Obama +0.5%
In (11) 0.5%
NH (4) 1.4%
CO (9) 1.6%

This would give McCain 278 ECV and victory.

Or, if McCain pulls it out in Mich where he is currently 3.2 points behind, netting MI's 17 ECV, he would win the presidency even if Obama wins NH and CO.

Obama is ahead and it is preferable to be ahead but let's not kid ourselves, he's ahead by a hair right now.

3. Seattle Obama fundraiser this Sat. night at Kucera gallery, with stars from Grey's Anatomy -- hosted by gay and lesbian council of DNC. $250 to get in it seems.

4. With Warner keynoting, Olberman made a good point that this means Kaine likely not VP choice, so we're looking at Bayh or Biden. Huh, why is Richardson off the list? I'd think that with all this Russia shit going down Biden is going to be the choice.

5. Got my Obama togs today. Good graphics. The tee shirt is most excellent.

The R's will do anything to win. Anything. Tell any lies. Spread rumors. Imply lack of patriotism and on and on etal. It reminds me of the ancient Romans. Whenever a campaign took place the graffitti would go up about how so and so was fucking so and so. It's always been the same. I wish the D's would get as nasty, but maybe they know better than me.

Why tell the truth when you can lie - that's what the America-hating Middle-Class-despising people who back Sen. McCain think.

They abhor our core American values of Truth, Justice, and the American Middle Class way of life, truth be told. And wrap themselves in false colors.

Also, much quoted, McCain telling Russia that "invading another country" is not 21st century behavior.

Pot, kettle.

Hey remember that post Dan put up about the fat woman who rolled over in her sleep onto a baby and killed it. Gawd-I'm still laughing. Someone mentioned how horrible it must be for that women to have killed that child. Dan of course has the right attitude about the incident. Who gives a fuck about that woman and kid. We sloggers have been amused-now let's move on to the next big thing.
