Nazi television from the 1930s, compiled by Spiegel TV. (Thanks for the heads up, MetaFilter.)

I thought it was a GOP ad when I watched it. It even pandered to the upset Hillary supporters.

That was profoundly disturbing

Uh, guys? Germany is SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT since 1945.

Posted by Greg | August 29, 2008 10:01 AM

wait, do you think GERMANS or NAZIS are scary. i love germans, they are some of the greatest, and most caring people that I know. I am in fact more scared of AMERICANS, that I am moving to Berlin.

Jesus, David, "German" does not equal "Nazi". Don't you have any German friends? They are SO SICK OF THIS SHIT.

Posted by Irena | August 29, 2008 10:03 AM

Sorry for yelling, but my German friends rock!

Posted by Irena | August 29, 2008 10:05 AM

Maybe WERE scary would've been better? This is almost 80 years old...Germans are some of the most progessive people in the world now.

(Kurt Schwabach, 1920's)

Was will man nur?
denn wir sind alle andrer Welten Kind;
wir lieben nur die lila Nacht, die schwül ist,
weil wir ja anders als die andern sind.

Wozu die Qual, uns die Moral
der andern aufzudrängen?
Wir, hört geschwind, sind wie wir sind,
selbst wollte man uns hängen.

Lousy goosesteppers. They can't sing for shit.

Look, bitches, I'M German, on both sides.

I'd offer to change the subject line from "German" to "Nazis" but the headline "Nazis are Scary" is ridiculous, and besides, if you don't want to risk being called "scary" for the rest of time, don't agree to/participate in the systematic slaughter millions of people.

Yet when you are learning German they always have you saying the most harmless things: Ich mag Schalgsahne. Die Kartofeln sind aufgeweicht. (I love whipped cream. The potatoes are soggy.) I suspect that someone simply edited the older versions of the book: Ich mag Schalgstocken. Die Gaskammer ist aufgefullt. (I love night-sticks. The gaschamber is full.)

That last guy must feel so proud of himself to carry on such an extended musical metaphor.

Posted by Bont | August 29, 2008 10:33 AM

7: That seems fair. Fixed.

Posted by David Schmader | August 29, 2008 10:36 AM

Thank you for fixing that David.

Am I the only one afraid of present-day Germans? Those people scare the hell out of me.

Posted by Medinadg | August 29, 2008 10:57 AM

@15, lots of people say the same thing about Americans.

Interestingly, Henry Miller once said that Germans make the best Americans.

Posted by Irena | August 29, 2008 11:04 AM

My favorite Americans have been the ones I met abroad.

Posted by Amelia | August 29, 2008 11:32 AM

Thank you, Henry Miller!

Actually, Germans make the best everything, especially schnitzel. And prison guards.

If Mr. Poe had a TV station, it would be exactly like that. Except in color.

sorta lame that we're all "bitches" to you. your credibility just dropped a few notches.

now im at your level.

Posted by ryan | August 29, 2008 2:09 PM

@10: I'm German on both sides too, and I don't appreciate this, you ignorant slut.

Posted by Greg | August 29, 2008 4:39 PM

Well, that would explain Mom's half of the family!

Is 3/4 German enough to say that I think the headline's pretty apt? Hell, most countries are scary. Germans are definitely up there for bizarre. =)
