The Washington State Republicans’ Backhanded Welcome to Michelle Obama

posted by on July 17 at 12:35 PM

I’m at the Michelle Obama fundraiser right now, listening to Gov. Christine Gregoire speak, so I can’t fully listen to this video that just landed in my in-box from the Washington State Republican Party. But it looks (and sounds, after a quick listen on headphones) as if Republicans in this state are taking a cue from their counterparts in South Carolina Tennessee, who I believe made a similar video earlier this year:

UPDATE: Back in May, the chairman of the Republican National Committee repudiated the Tennessee Republican Party for making the video that the Washington State Republican Party just copied. Will he do the same now?

Mellow-dee Lee-yoe can express herself freely off any cue card in America!!! Rock on, sister!!!

OK, I know it's "important" to have "real people" on videos like these, but this is all I could think for the first three talking heads.

I am grateful to be able to live in the land of the free and the... **PLEASE! McCain is just off camera with a hungry pit bull and he says they'll place my children with a gay family if I don't make this video!**

Is Val Stevens a robot? Her voice-chip seems to be malfunctioning.

Posted by JC | July 17, 2008 12:46 PM

I hate this shit.

Posted by Bub | July 17, 2008 12:47 PM

Lame as it ever was.

Val Stevens is a really scary legislator. She has some pretty extreme viewpoints.

I wish that a good democratic candidate would arise up and take her on from north Snohomish County. The guy they have running against her right now has no chance.

That video made me ashamed that we have the freedom to look that bad on camera. Seriously, couldn't they at least find good looking people who are proud to be americans and republican at the same time?

A little off topic, but have you seen this guy running for state rep. in Kansas? Seems worth supporting someone with, um, sanity in that area of the country.

well, I guess there's more of a hick mentality in this neck of the woods than I thought.

Not so much offensive as lame and amateur. I've rarely seen such flat reading of que cards before.

I doubt they'll score very many converts with this ad.

They're digging their own graves with this one... Wow....

Posted by mcbush | July 17, 2008 1:16 PM

I'm having flashbacks to the Disney Hall of Presidents animatrons...Don't the republicans have enough money to pay for acting lessons? They all looked and sounded like they had been hit with horse tranqs, the costumes and lighting were pretty bad, the jerky eye movements were distracting.

After a few viewings to try to understand why they are proud:

Lori: we live in the land of the free and home of the brave

Melody: we can express ourselves however we wish

Val: this country has given more blood for freedom than any other country in the world (wtf??)

Rose: no matter what your background is you can do whatever you set your mind to

Not very convincing arguments, but Val Stevens wins the prize for creepiest old lady.

Mell-oh-dee Lee-yow is proud because we can express ourselves however we wish...unless your name is Michelle Obama.

I love the irony of conservative Christians being proud to be Americans, since pride is a sin and all.

We must close the blood gap! Val Stevens demands more blood!

Posted by NapoleonXIV | July 17, 2008 1:36 PM

The GOP has a presence in Washington?

Posted by Fitz | July 17, 2008 1:36 PM

We won't support ball-less NO-Bama and will re-defeat him in November!!!

Posted by clintonsarmy | July 17, 2008 1:41 PM

They couldn't find more than 3 people?

Posted by Chris | July 17, 2008 1:54 PM

lori sotelo is proud to be an american because she can try to commit fraud by commiting perjury and erroneously challenging the voter registrations of hundreds of King County residents on the eve of the election in a vain attempt to give dino rossi the governor's mansion.

she is a class act.

maleng, a fellow republican, saved her ass and kept her from going to jail on a perjury chaege.

At this rate, Idaho will join the ranks of Washington and Montana in decimating the GOP both on the statewide and national level.

Sad, how much the Red Bushies hate America and our core values of Truth, Justice, and the American Middle Class way of life ...

seriously, cue cards? come on people, you couldn't riff on why you claim to love america? its not like it was a live feed or anything, you could have edited.

Posted by douglas | July 17, 2008 2:52 PM

It sounds like Val was able to tear herself away from the TV long enough to mug for the camera. I hesitate to guess at what she was watching.

Posted by Ryan | July 17, 2008 4:08 PM

@8 No kidding... They need to pay more attention to SLOG so they can track this lady down:

Hot, lesbian AND republican!!

Posted by Clint | July 17, 2008 4:26 PM

The response to this should be "is that all you've got?"

Posted by former editor | July 17, 2008 6:25 PM

What, is this on local public access? That ad sux.

Posted by rb | July 17, 2008 8:35 PM

This video is right on. Sorry but there were many more of us who would like to have been in it, but we all work for a living and were busy. It is a fact that Mrs BO has pledged her honor to the mother land country and she is not proud of America. Stick to the facts and the truth comes out. The name calling does not change the facts. Arn't we all supposed to be for Tolerance? Tolerance, it is only tolerated in one direction. I have to get back to work now.

An updated more topical version starring more WA Republicans has been posted as a response to the original:
