City City Optimistic About Police Hiring

onIt looks like the city’s new contract with the Seattle Police Officers’ Guild (SPOG) is making an impact on recruiting.
According to new data from the city, Seattle’s managed to pick up about 50 recruits and new officers since the city came to an agreement with SPOG in May 2007. Prior to that, SPD’s staffing had become, according to SPOG President Rich O’Neil, “very dangerous.”
It looks like the city has only hired about 30 recruits/officers since the beginning of the year, so who knows if SPD will be able to make its recruitment goals for the year—I believe it’s 80 officers—but it looks like the city’s optimistic about the current hiring trends.

Of course, with NYPD officers in Seattle, maybe we could use a bit stronger police accountability system? Didn't they, like, invent the blue code of silence over there?
They'd better be hot, lean and sexy...I'm tired of all the fat-ass cops in this town.
Who would have guessed?
The article linked by Trevor @2 includes an interesting table comparing Seattle to New York. A bit of arithmetic adds some further context:
Seattle NYC
24 496 Murders in 2007
582K 8.2M Population
4.1 6.0 Murder rate per 100,000
1.2K 35K Cops
206 427 Cops per 100k population
50 71 Cops per annual murder
(added lines in bold)
1. Our murder rate is 66% of the NYC rate? Holy shit!!
So we ain't this nirvana after all. 66% the murders, and 0% the transit!
2. Adding 2x cops needed to keep the murder differential only 50%?
Cops have declining marginal utility.
Long story short, I was in a Bed-Stuy holding cell a few weeks ago. The partner of my arresting officer apologized for his new partner's zeal (don't bike on the sidewalk if you forgot about that open container ticket), explaining that he lost his "real" partner to the SPD after they promised to triple his salary: "This is not how we did things. This is my [new] partner's thing." So good on you, Seattle, for taking the decent cops.
PC @6, calm yourself. Based on 2006 numbers, out of 72 U.S. cities with 250,000 people or more, New York ranked 50th with a murder rate of 7.3. Seattle ranked 60th with 5.1. The median murder rate for all 72 cities was about 11.5.
