Acting President

posted by on July 26 at 19:07 PM

A nice passage from Frank Rich:

What was most striking about the Obama speech in Berlin was not anything he said so much as the alternative reality it fostered: many American children have never before seen huge crowds turn out abroad to wave American flags instead of burn them.

Charles,
I didn't read the Rich piece nor did I see the speech in Berlin. But, it's highly dubious many American children viewed the speech at all. American flags burning in foreign makes news not American flags waving. The draw in Berlin was Sen. Obama. He's a rock star sensation. Young, handsome, lithe and intelligent, there's is no doubt he is a "cult of personality". That's not necessarily a fault or good attribute. The trip went well but it HAD to have gone well. The NYT commented "he looked presidential but tried not to overdo it". Indeed.

This exact thought was conveyed by Jon Stewart on the Thursday night broadcast.

Reading Frank Rich's column is my Sunday morning feel-good ritual.
