Remember Nicholas Francisco?

The 28-year-old SeaTac man and father of two who disappeared without a trace on Feb. 13?

In the wake of his disappearance, Nicholas Francisco’s (pregnant) wife Christine led an increasingly desperate search. Here’s video of Christine on Nancy Grace, in which she weeps for her missing man, whom she describes as “so sweet.”

This past Monday, Christine Francisco filed for divorce from her vanished husband. What’s more, as the Seattle Post-Intelligencer reports:

In requesting custody of her children, Christine Francisco’s petition alleges “willful abandonment that continues for a period of time” and a “history of acts of domestic violence … or an assault or sexual assault which causes grievous bodily harm or the fear of such harm.”

Alrighty then.

So all of us who were *Gasp* skeptical of this whole story, got castigated, edited and generally derided for questioning this story, now DEMAND an apology from you lemmings.

Posted by ecce homo | June 18, 2008 9:48 AM

Gee, she didn't have anything to do with it, did she...?

Posted by DanFan | June 18, 2008 9:51 AM

Yeah, for the ten minutes there that it looked like this guy might have been murdered, and his family was checking in on the blog, we wanted to hold back the bile. So sue us.

Posted by Dan Savage | June 18, 2008 9:54 AM

Dude, if they couldn't handle the bile, they just shouldn't have clicked on "Post Comments". The internet is a mean, nasty place, and you shouldn't spend time on it if you don't have a thick enough skin to handle it. Commentors shouldn't have to be civil just because someone's family member might have been murdered. Right? Right? Back me up here, regular commentors.

So much for how time makes the heart grow fonder....

Ahh, I love it when people take things to laughable extremes.

Oh, wait. I actually hate it.

Posted by Abby | June 18, 2008 10:08 AM

I highly doubt he is dead. Think about it. Young guy, relatively good-looking, has a wife and two young kids with one more on the way. He probably felt trapped. He took off, probably out of the country with someone else.
With a history of DV and an obsession with his laptop (they said he was never seen without it) he probably had an online "relationship" with someone else. Most people who are abusive to their partners lead double lives. I know mine did.

Posted by smp | June 18, 2008 10:09 AM

@5: Don't forget when Charles suggested a boy killed his own adopted sister!

But hey, we call people "cunt", so, boo on us.

Posted by Gloria | June 18, 2008 10:11 AM

@5, Dude, maybe his family and friends were extremely desperate and worried, and maybe they clicked on the comments to see if there was any information at all as to his whereabouts, and just maybe they didn't need to deal with all the ugly vitriol right at that moment. Just 'cuz teh internetz is a mean, nasty place doesn't mean that we *always* have to competely toss human decency out the window. Just most of the time.

Posted by rb | June 18, 2008 10:17 AM

I can't believe I actually agree with ecce (@2) on something.

Posted by Westlake, son! | June 18, 2008 10:22 AM

That's a strange bit of wording. Sounds like checkbox/boilerplate, why would I file a claim that someone did X or Y. Actually sounds pretty stupid, I should know what they did if I'm going to claim it in front of a court.

Posted by daniel | June 18, 2008 10:22 AM

@8 nailed it. what i wanna know is, how is this missing guy supporting himself? with bank accounts and credit card transactions traceable he could easily be found. so is his online patootie supporting him or something? where is vincent d'onofrio when you need him?

Posted by scary tyler moore | June 18, 2008 10:23 AM

He just looks so GAY.

Posted by Sue Ann | June 18, 2008 10:31 AM

I hate to sound like a dick, but is it possible these claims have been a little, er, inflated just to speed up the process? I mean, it's easy when he's not around to contest them.

Posted by tsm | June 18, 2008 10:38 AM

Filing for divorce seems like it would be pretty standard operating procedure in a case where all evidence points to abandonment. I don't really see anything sinister about it.

Posted by Gorf | June 18, 2008 10:40 AM

The weird thing in her petition is that you don't have to allege any reason to justify a divorce in Washington. All you have to do is tell the court, "The marriage is irretrievably broken." Say those magic words and you're legally entitled to the divorce. (The words are already right there on the pre-printed form. You just check the box.) Don't know why this woman and/or her attorney threw in the unnecessary stuff about abandonment and alleged violence unless she's got some ulterior motive. If she just wanted a divorce, she didn't need to make those allegations. Something seems fishy, here.

Posted by Mason | June 18, 2008 10:44 AM

Well that's a turnaround.

Posted by Greg | June 18, 2008 10:49 AM

If she feels heís run off then itís good having her divorce and full custody in hand before anything else happens.

Say he turns up in 10 years with a new wife and expects some entitlement to waltz back into the kidís life.

I can see why she has taken these actions to protect her and the kids future.

If she feels he's run off on her and the kids she's not going to be happy and say "oh well, it didn't work out" on legal papers. She is going for all she can and noting the DV for furute use if needed. She's upset, being hurt and abandoned like that.

Posted by irl | June 18, 2008 10:53 AM

#17, it probably has to do with future custody agreements. She might fear that he will return and try to gain equal custody of their children if the marriage was merely "irretrievably broken".

Posted by w7ngman | June 18, 2008 10:54 AM

I have a friend who worked with our missing man at Publicis. Publicis hired a private investigator to look into the matter. One thing the PI found was that an older, gay gentleman from Capitol Hill went missing the very same evening. Could explain who's paying the way.

Posted by Seattle ExPat | June 18, 2008 10:57 AM

I think he is slinging dime bags in Agrestic

Posted by Fortuna Mandolin | June 18, 2008 11:00 AM

@21 -- Actually, that older man is currently stuffed into Mr. Poe's crawl space.

Posted by Jubilation T. Cornball | June 18, 2008 11:00 AM

Okay, okay. Now this thread is a GOOD example of a bunch of people being dicks.

(It is, btw, the same crap over at the P-I's article, with many accusations of murder, sexist banter about women driving men away, etc etc.)

Posted by leek | June 18, 2008 11:03 AM

So is he dead, was he found, is he gay? By filing for divorce it sounds to me that he has been found because you cannot serve divorce papers to someone who is not there can you? I do not know these things because we gays have only been allowed to marry for a few days so it will take a few more before we start getting divorced. And for the record @9 that kid so plowed over his sister.

Posted by Wanted dead or alive | June 18, 2008 11:06 AM

Yeah, but, unless he abused the kids, domestic violence isn't necessarily enough to deny him custody or at least visitation. The best interest of the child is the primary consideration, and many family courts don't consider domestic violence enough reason to deny a parent access to his or her children.

Posted by keshmeshi | June 18, 2008 11:07 AM

So quick to judge. I can't say for sure, but please remember to consider things like context. Just because someone has to mark that they've had a felony on a job application, doesn't mean that they've committed a heinous crime, it could actually mean for instance, that you got into a fight with another adult trying to protect yourself and said adult's tooth got knocked out. I just read about felony charges being handed down for this example. Please remember that forms have boxes with general descriptions that cover a vast amount of things. Also, please remember that selecting said box may have simply been the quickest way to her desired outcome. Which would have been poor judgment on her part, but is possible. Again, I can't say for sure, just asking people to think twice before they throw out everything else about this case and his good name.

Posted by A | June 18, 2008 11:08 AM

@21 - what a juciy tidbit!

Posted by irl | June 18, 2008 11:16 AM

@10. I think your sarcasmeter is broken. :)

Posted by Julie | June 18, 2008 11:17 AM

@21 - I knew it!!!

Posted by Sue Ann | June 18, 2008 11:19 AM

@24 - huh? Where has anyone here said he was driven away by his wife?

I saw the story about her filing for divorce yesterday and figured it was probably a recommendation by her lawyer - she may need to legally separate her money from his, for instance - but that report didn't include the DV portions. Not sure what to think although I still think it's a boilerplate move. It does make me think they might have found evidence that he is alive and deliberately staying away, though.

All the comments and online speculation are really disconcerting. Nicholas was a friend of mine and the truth is, nobody really knows what really happened. I don't really know Christine well so I can't (and don't want to) comment on her actions. I know speculation is natural in cases like this, but sometimes the snarkiness is a bit too much.

Posted by antiuser | June 18, 2008 11:49 AM

Sorry genevieve, I should have said "similar" rather than "same." I figured people would get the point.

Posted by leek | June 18, 2008 12:14 PM

#14 said it. Been thinking the same thing this whole time.

Posted by Woops | June 18, 2008 12:38 PM

Wow, that Myspace page brings things into a whole new context...

And seeing as it was made well before the disappearance, I'd say the chance of forgery is unlikely.

Posted by UNPAID BLOGGER | June 18, 2008 12:44 PM

So he skipped out, abandoned his fam, and she wanted to track him down. Then when he's not coming back or getting tracked down, she files for divorce because she wants child support. So yeah, in the early days she went for the honey to get him back, but now it's time for the vinegar.

I'm just glad we can identify people's sexuality by appearance now. This is going to make things so much easier...

Posted by leek | June 18, 2008 1:15 PM

I don't understand why some people don't just get divorced instead of running away or murdering their spouse. So you'll pay for awhile. Big deal. Stop being a coward. Be a man and pay for your kids. We shouldn't have to pick up the tab. As soon as I heard his wife was pregnant I thought he ran away. I still think so.

Posted by Vince | June 18, 2008 2:11 PM

this comment thread has gotten seriously out of control ... again. See the post @10 regarding human decency please. despite what may or may not be the circumstances regarding Nic's disappearance, he is still cared for by many people. have a little respect people.

@ 41 my thoughts exactly Kevin.

Posted by A | June 18, 2008 5:10 PM

My heart goes out to Christine. Having been abandoned by my first husband with an infant daughter, I'm sure it wasn't an easy decision for her to file for divorce. Additionally, when you're in an abusive relationship, you may not realize it until the abuser leaves and you don't have to walk on eggshells anymore. Because this is a community property state, and with no concrete evidence of foul play, she may have filed for divorce to protect herself so she isn't responsible for any bills that he may be accruing if he is still alive.

Posted by HIH | June 18, 2008 5:20 PM

@43 My friend once did that with his face and Brandon Boyds, from the band Incubus. Definitely didn't mean that he was in fact Brandon Boyd.

Posted by A | June 18, 2008 5:43 PM

I'm not sure he's responsbile for his actions... he may not even know where he is! Has anybody checked all the psych hospitals in the PacNW for a disoriented man with yellow plants growing out of his skull?

Posted by CP | June 18, 2008 10:36 PM

I saw Christine on Nancy Grace and thought, "What's up with this woman"? She grinned at the wrong times, cried no real tears, and was able to go instantly from a fake crying voice to a very animated one. This woman clearly has issues.
IF she and Nicholas resigned from the Mars Hill church only 2 days before he went missing, then I really believe that someone from this crazy church had something to do with it. Could Christine have been having an affair with someone from that church and the baby is really someone else's?
Get mad at me if you want to, but little chameleon looking Christine probably knows exactly what happened to Nicholas.
Christine is constantly quoting Bible verses, etc. She made Nicholas out to be almost a saint when he first went missing, now he is an abuser according to her. I do not think the real truth is in this woman!
I think that someone from the church approached Nicholas (someone he knew), told him he wanted to talk about their departure from the church, and things went bad from there.
I also do not think that Christine is being completely truthful with that moderator from HFTM.
LE should look VERY closely at Christine and her friends!
Also very odd of the timeframe of Nicholas dissappearance. What did Christine do about filing income tax? She and Nicholas both had online businesses. They would owe taxes. Did they think they could not pay?
Just too many maybe's here.

Posted by Lindsay | June 21, 2008 11:32 AM

There is nothing, anywhere, on anyone else remotely close to Capital Hill having gone missing around the same time as Nicholas. Where did you get your info?

Posted by curiousone | June 22, 2008 7:55 PM

@8 I know he had met someone from the internet years ago (before he was married) so it's very possible that it happened again

Posted by anon | June 23, 2008 11:19 PM

CP- I'm with you, that woman is nuts! Watching her on Nancy Grace and Greta, she was so phony - I feel thats why Nancy and Greta didn't follow - up on it til Greta did last week, and I think she is just as curious as the rest of us are with her filing for a divorce. She has spreaded trash thru others on the internet sites. I think if anyone has been abused it was Nicholas - heck - if she can tell people on her own sites to SHUT - UP, imagine how she treated Nicholas! She said she wore the pants in the house and I too believe her child is probably someone from that church. Miss Holier than Thou, she is NOT! I believe with her remarks about him being murder and in or near water was very revealing. I pray he is alive and that he comes forward and takes them kids from her - what Mother would use thier children in the publics eye like she did, I'm sorry I would shield my kids from all the news and stuff. The woman is insane. All Just My Opinion Of Course!!!
