Hey, Big Spender

posted by on May 7 at 13:19 PM

The right-wing noise machines makes sure we all hear about it when a Democrat—those supposed friends of the working class—accidentally stiffs a waitress in Iowa or New Hampshire. So it’s nice to hear that Barack Obama left a 900% tip on a bartender in North Carolina this week.

Of course, every tip Obama leaves from here on out will be measured against this very large tip, and we’re going to hear about any tip the Democratic candidate leaves that doesn’t match or beat the size of this tip.

look how he's SIPPING that beer. only an ELITIST sips beer. real americans guzzle it.

thank Jebus it isn't dark beer.

PBR? I would have thought he'd have better taste than that.

Posted by cmaceachen | May 7, 2008 1:29 PM

From what I hear, no one can beat the size of Obama's tip.

I'm Frank Booth, and I approve this message.

There goes most of my contribution.

Posted by quilsone | May 7, 2008 1:40 PM

Is drinking PBR his penance for the clinging comment or something?

I'd say "What he's drinking in that picture looks more substantial than a PBR," but truthfully, I've never seen a PBR not in a can.

What an idiot.

Posted by w7ngman | May 7, 2008 1:55 PM

Maybe the beer was on the house and Obama dropped down a $10 bill, that's easily over 900%.

Posted by raindrop | May 7, 2008 1:59 PM

"Right-wing noise machines"? That story got plenty of attention right here on Slog -- and Andrew Sullivan practically posted minute-by-minute updates on it.

Seriously, I'm glad I'm voting for a guy who drinks PBR. Go, Obama!

Posted by Matt Fuckin' Hickey | May 7, 2008 2:08 PM

Someone get him a Foster's or a NW microbrew ...

Posted by Will in Seattle | May 7, 2008 2:12 PM

I agree with Hickey on this. An alternate title for this could be "Obama secures hipster vote"

Posted by Little Red Ryan Hood | May 7, 2008 2:16 PM

An Illinois man drinks PBR or Old Milwaukee. Keep your foo foo Seattle beers in Seattle. For me to drink.

Posted by Chris | May 7, 2008 2:21 PM

OMG, he's drinking beer!?! How condescending! What is he trying to prove?! What an alcoholic slut!

Posted by Carollani | May 7, 2008 2:22 PM

Fosters? NW microbrew? Fuck that shit! Pabst Blue Ribbon!

Posted by Frank Booth | May 7, 2008 2:24 PM

PBR is unbelievably foul. If you have to drink a lawnmower beer, stick to Bud or Miller High Life (not that MGD smegma). Foster's is piss, too; it's the worst beer in Australia. Cooper's, please.

Posted by Fnarf | May 7, 2008 2:34 PM

It's only because you can't get Old Style down in NC.

Posted by quilsone | May 7, 2008 2:34 PM

I approve of the PBR drinking. Im not a hipster, but I have passed by the former Peoria PBR brewery many times.

Posted by Bellevue Ave | May 7, 2008 2:35 PM

Wow, most of the commenters on TMZ are really, really stupid. Well, I guess that's to be expected.

The Democratic process was never meant for this type of scrutiny/splitting of hairs/analysis/magnification of minute detail.

It's absolutely ridiculous.

Posted by Non | May 7, 2008 3:07 PM

Another "boozing it up black man": Is that what we want leading America!?!?!

Posted by Cato the Younger Younger | May 7, 2008 3:10 PM

Most of the people that would consider PBR "booze" wouldn't vote for Obama anyway.

Posted by Mike of Renton | May 7, 2008 3:17 PM

I can't believe he gave such a huge tip. Showing off his vast wealth - what an elitist!

Posted by bobbo | May 7, 2008 3:21 PM

When I go to a bar to get drinks and such, I always tip somewhere around 100%. I'm there just as long as most other people are, but I have one beer and then just enjoy the conversation.

Really it's just a sign of sympathy for the plight of the working man. Barack Obama comes into a bar with a bunch of people which is probably a little disruptive and not everyone is actually buying something. It's nice to be considerate for the inconvenience shown.

@3-post of the day!
@everyone who claims he likes PBR. It's not good, you're not ironic, and it's SO cliche to pretend you like it. All that shit is piss... wait a minute, my expletives have become confused... all that shit is shit. There, that works better.
That said, I think he should drink good beer if he likes it. I'd love to hear Rush complaining about Obama while using words like "Warsteiner," "trappist," or "hefeweisen."

WAIT, no, better yet, "brown ale" or "dark porter!" How much fun would we have with that?

Posted by MR. Language Person | May 7, 2008 4:51 PM

I found that PBR tasted better when I mixed it half and half with water. And by "better," I mean "less objectionable." C'mon, guys, PBR is piss.

Posted by Greg | May 7, 2008 5:11 PM

Suave! Goddamn Obama's one suave fucker!

Posted by Frank Booth | May 7, 2008 6:54 PM

language person; i like it, im not pretending i like it, and it is perfect for making brass monkeys and for the price you pay for it. some people dont drink beer for flavor alone.

Posted by Bellevue Ave | May 7, 2008 11:08 PM

Now see, you actually seems to and isn't just pretending... but it is fun being a smartass.
Never heard of a brass monkey, though. I'll have to look it up.
