Obama: “100 Years” McCain Would Be Better than Bush

posted by on April 21 at 13:42 PM

“You have a real choice in this election. Either Democrat would be better than John McCain,” Obama said to cheers from a rowdy crowd in central Pennsylvania. Then he said: “And all three of us would be better than George Bush.”

Um, dudeΩ: Really?

(Relevant quotes from above: 1) McCain (in response to a question about how many years the US should stay in Iraq): “Make it a hundred. … We’ve been in South Korea … we’ve been in Japan for 60 years. We’ve been in South Korea 50 years or so. That would be fine with me.” 2) Republican Sen. Bob Smith: “[McCain’s] temper would place this country at risk in international affairs, and the world perhaps in danger. In my mind it should disqualify him.” 3) McCain again: “I do not support Roe v. Wade. I think it should be overturned.”

McCain would be better than Bush. A trained monkey would be better than Bush. Even an untrained monkey would probably be better.

Not that I'd expect you to be even-handed, Erica, but where were your criticisms when Clinton made the following statement?

"I think that I have a lifetime of experience that I will bring to the White House. I know Senator McCain has a lifetime of experience to the White House. And Senator Obama has a speech he gave in 2002."

Posted by Bob | April 21, 2008 1:47 PM

Someone with the exact same agenda, but without the cronyism problem would be better than bush.

Posted by Andrew | April 21, 2008 1:49 PM

Let's be honest about the 100 year comment. McCain's point is that we've been in Japan and S. Korea for decades in a primarily peaceful role.

When he talks about 100 years in Iraq that's what he's talking about, not 100 years of war. Now, personally I think he's full of shit and unrealistic, but let's at least criticize him for what he said.

Posted by honestdem | April 21, 2008 1:53 PM

Is Bush any different than your points 1, 2 &3? How are they any different? At least McCain will talk to a democrat.

He's saying how lousy Bush was--not "hey, if ya don't vote for me, Vote McCain." Hillary was much closer to that meaning in her statement.

As for the "100 years" quote--anytime McCain comes close to supporting open-ended occupation of Iran, he should be asked one simple question:

"Then why aren't we still in Viet Nam?"

People, you're slipping here. There was a full five minutes between when ECB first posted this tripe and when a commenter finally pointed out Hillary's own claim that McCain was superior to Obama. I mean, I saw this ECB post coming long before she spewed it out. Come on here.

Posted by tsm | April 21, 2008 1:59 PM

McCain at least acknowledges that global warming is a serious problem, and has traveled to Antarctica...Bush realized this last week.

So yes, he is better.

Posted by dem | April 21, 2008 2:00 PM

Ditto to Andrew. Can't anyone fucking read (or better yet listen) to the entire quote. It was a fucking slam on Bush, (unless of course you excerpt or bold the section highlighted by Obama's opponent).

Erica - hear that flushing sound? it's your (well-earned) rep going down the drain.

McCain isn't openly hostile to the very concept of government. He has different ideas about the government's role in society, but at least he'll make sure that it's run competently. So, yes, he's better than Bush. Not that anyone with any sense should vote for him.

Thank you Bob @ 2... you took the words right out of my fingers.

Posted by SDizzle | April 21, 2008 2:10 PM

Vote for Hillary! We can't allow a pro-Negro liberal to get anywhere near the White House.

Posted by UnUnPC | April 21, 2008 2:11 PM

Why let a little thing like journalistic integrity get in the way of a good vendetta?

Posted by UNPAID BLOGGER | April 21, 2008 2:15 PM

i read this exact same post earlier today on shakesville [*ahem*]. funny, they disregarded the first half of the sentence, too.

Posted by brandon | April 21, 2008 2:17 PM

ECB, this is truly becoming sad(der by the minute). Stop embarrassing yourself. As this really, really smart fellow said, a deceased potted plant would be better than Bush. Saying so does not a McCain supporter make. It does, however, show your ability to recognize the painfully obvious and to articulate it. Shame your candidate has lost her ability to recognize truthful statements, or tell the difference between "tough" questions and "stupid" questions.

You really should stop getting ALL your news from Clinton press releases.

Posted by switzerblog | April 21, 2008 2:18 PM

c'mon, ECB. You write good pieces and then you post a non-issue/quote like this one. Disappointing.

Posted by stinkbug | April 21, 2008 2:21 PM

Just stop. I've said it before... post about kittens, or food, or tropical plants or anything, anything at all, but just let the politics go. You look stupid.

Posted by monkey | April 21, 2008 2:33 PM

Not long enough nor nonsensical enough to be a proper unPC parody, and you forgot to cite meaningless polls.

Posted by w7ngman | April 21, 2008 2:43 PM

@17, She's not stupid just stubborn as all hell.

Posted by Andrew | April 21, 2008 2:50 PM

Frankly, any trained monkey would be better than GWB.

Posted by Will in Trained Monkey Seattle | April 21, 2008 3:34 PM

Oh, come on Erica, cut the Hillary talking points. Of course everything is relative, but McCain would probably be a tiny bit better than Bush - or put another way, Bush is probably a tiny bit worse than McCain would be.

But if you and Hillary really gave a crap, she wouldn't be doing everything she can to help McCain win in November!

Posted by Daniel K | April 21, 2008 3:39 PM

From now on I will only be responding to these idiotic posts from this author by saying:

You fucking suck you fucking hypocrite.

Thank you.

Posted by Ed | April 21, 2008 3:46 PM

Well, at least Obama didn't say that McCain would be better than Hillary.

And Obama's right. I don't like McCain, and disagree with most of his politics, but he'd still be better than Bush. Bush is the worst president in at least 100 years. McCain would be bad, but he'd still be a step up from Bush.

Posted by SDA in SEA | April 21, 2008 4:28 PM

Wow. Erica, how is it that you manage to keep a job? Because your -- I can't even call it a vendetta towards Obama, or blind favoritism for Hillary, it so surpasses reason -- idiocy just really boggles the mind.

Posted by Terry | April 21, 2008 4:41 PM

Cindy, our next First Lady, will discreetly but consistently calm her husband to prevent any unsettling public displays of loosing his temper. Of course Lincoln, Nixon, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush have lost their temper at times and it doesn't seem to have affected world events in any discernable way.

Posted by raindrop | April 21, 2008 4:58 PM

After calling me out on fanning the flames of streetcar hysteria, you give us this hysterical non-issue to mull over.

Posted by Ryan | April 21, 2008 6:35 PM

At first I was like "What? This doesn't make sense."
And then I was like "Oh, Erica."

Posted by Mr Fuzzy | April 21, 2008 7:28 PM

Cmon Erica, you are reaching...its getting sad...You AND Hilary should just give up...

Posted by poopstuckinmyteeth | April 21, 2008 10:37 PM

Holy crap... the anger and misogyny is overflowing here.
