Seattle’s New MLS Team Will Be Named Either…

posted by on March 20 at 16:52 PM

…Seattle Alliance, Seattle Republic, or Seattle FC. So reports the Seattle P.I.’s Big Blog by way of MLS Rumors (brought to my attention by way of Slog-tipper Will.)

My choice is Seattle FC. People can vote March 27-31 at

Peoples Republic of Seattle, or Popular peoples FC of Cascadian Proletarians

Seattle FC is my choice.

Posted by McCain/Crist '08! | March 20, 2008 5:04 PM

FC Seattle sounds more like a real team, but alas, it would never fly around here.

Seattle FC

Posted by don't break the oath | March 20, 2008 5:06 PM

I voted for Seattle FC before forwarding this here, but I really want Seattle Green River Killers, or Seattle GRK.

Glad they trademarked Seattle FC, since it's the least lame choice so far.

Now, let's CRUSH David Beckham and make Posh Spice CRY!

You know, all those names are TOO DAMN exciting. Let's tone them down a bit, since America is already way to rabid about their love of soccer. We don't want any hooliganism.

How about the Seattle... Municipals! Utilitarians! Service Workers!

Oh, and better make the team colors beige and gray, but not too gray.

just a little shameless promotion here... Northwest Film Forum will screen two of the greatest soccer films ever made during the MLS opening weekend this year, ZIDANE A 21ST CENTURY PORTRAIT and FOOTBALL AS NEVER BEFORE about the great George best.

more info here.

No "Seattle United"?

Posted by bma | March 20, 2008 5:14 PM

I just hope the FC stands for something, and the name of the team is actually "Seattle Football Club", abbreviated casually as "Seattle FC", as in "Liverpool FC", and not just "Seattle Eff See", full stop. The other two are wicked retahded, seeing as how it's not an alliance and it's not a republic, and neither of those things are associated with Seattle in any way.

Posted by Fnarf | March 20, 2008 5:18 PM

Nah, you can't handle United. But you might be able to handle FC. Cool, Adam!

Posted by Will in Seattle | March 20, 2008 5:19 PM

FC is as good as it gets.

Posted by Lloyd Clydesdale | March 20, 2008 5:22 PM

@9: FC = Fucking Christians

Posted by Just sayin | March 20, 2008 5:23 PM

I'm with the Seattle People's Liberation Front.

Posted by NapoleonXIV | March 20, 2008 5:24 PM

No CSKA Seattle or Seattle/Tacoma Albion?

Posted by kebabs | March 20, 2008 5:32 PM

What, we're stuck with those three? Nothing would beat voting for the Seattle Obamatrons.

Posted by umvue | March 20, 2008 5:47 PM

Obviously who ever came up with these was "inspired" by a Star Wars convention or something. If ya gotta go that route, the Seattle Wookies would be a better fit.

Nah, Seattle FC would be better.

Posted by Mike of Renton | March 20, 2008 5:55 PM

I hope FC stands for Fagbar Club.

Posted by Explorer | March 20, 2008 6:02 PM

really? but i heard something different on which is a dating site for interracial singles.

Posted by jeff | March 20, 2008 6:04 PM

@15, can we please have at least one thread without discussing politics? It's old.

Posted by okay? | March 20, 2008 6:11 PM

@19, OK. I delete comment no. 15.

Posted by umvue | March 20, 2008 6:17 PM

As much as I knew deep down that calling the team the Seattle Green River Killers would never actually fly, I still feel disappointment.

Posted by Hernandez | March 20, 2008 6:20 PM

@20, we're cool.

Posted by okay? | March 20, 2008 6:22 PM

I don't think they could have picked more-boring, less-interesting names if they had deliberately done polling and focus groups on the club names that would inspire the least interest and fervor. How about the Seattle Zzzzzzz or the FC Shhhhhhh? I'm seriously re-thinking my plans to get season tickets if this is the quality of the drivel that the management concocts . . . Let's see, how about if we just USE THE NAME WE ALREADY HAVE THAT PEOPLE LOVE?!?!?!?! GO SOUNDERS!!!

Posted by Murgen | March 20, 2008 7:01 PM

Seattle FC. Period.

Posted by Dave Coffman | March 20, 2008 7:05 PM

Seattle WC

Regarding the "Republic" name:

Many followers of Spanish soccer are familiar with the storied rivalry between FC Barcelona and Real Madrid. This rivalry is partially rooted in the roles of those two cities during the Spanish Civil War. Madrid was a stronghold of the quasi-royalist ("Real") Nationalists, while Barcelona was a hotbed of Republican sentiment.

Given Drew Carey's known fondness for FC Barcelona, perhaps the notion behind "Seattle Republic" is to gin up some kind of rivalry with Real Salt Lake.

"Generalissimo Dema Kovalenko is still dead!"

Their PR people must be ex-PI, ex-Times, and ex-local television. What a fuckin load of bland.

We're the Seattle Penis Envy.

Posted by King Rat | March 20, 2008 8:44 PM

I can't believe no one has thought of it yet: FC = fucking cocksuckers. GO FC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Also, @ 21, me too...

Posted by Mike in MO | March 20, 2008 8:55 PM

Emerald City FC was better than those first two. Seriously. Seattle Alliance? Sigh.

Posted by Abby | March 20, 2008 9:36 PM

Fuck soccer. It's like hockey on thorazine.

Posted by Big Sven | March 20, 2008 9:40 PM

@23: One problem: There's already a team named the Sounders, and they're not ready to give up the name.

Posted by bigyaz | March 21, 2008 7:44 AM

This is all well-and-good, so far as it goes, but what I really want to know is: what corporate logo is going to dominate their uniforms to the point that everybody will think THAT'S the name of the team instead of the one they pick?
