That is actually an en-dash, I believe, which makes even less sense. An em-dash would have been better suited punctuation.

I don't think it's meant to be a hyphen; I think it's meant to be an em dash. It's still a clunky way to construct the phrase, however.

Posted by grammar fascist | February 20, 2008 9:03 AM

That is not a hyphen; it is a dash and it is used correctly.

Jesus Christ - slow frigging newsday or do you have a competition with Seattle metropolitan to see who can come up with the lamest shit?

Posted by brad in seattle | February 20, 2008 9:05 AM

4) It's more of a race than a competition.

Posted by Tuna | February 20, 2008 9:09 AM

It's an m dash; not a hyphen--sorry.

Posted by Brendan | February 20, 2008 9:13 AM

Why do you always bring up race?

Posted by db | February 20, 2008 9:13 AM

Are you, currently taking the-copy editing class at UW right now and; wielding you're new Found techniques or something?

I think reporting on the hello kitty custom paint job pistol is much worthier of attention than all hyphen, plain dash, em- and en-dash reporting combined.

More Hello Kitty and friends reporting! I command thee!

"now under construction"

also -- i think that phone number uses hyphens when it should use en-dashes.

Posted by infrequent | February 20, 2008 9:22 AM

It's improper kerning not a grammatical error.

Posted by unPC | February 20, 2008 9:24 AM

It shoulda been a colon.

Posted by J.R. | February 20, 2008 9:38 AM

Lol typography nubs. Yes there could be more space between the dash and surrounding characters (kerning), but the main story is that christopher got ownt.

Posted by Jason Petersen | February 20, 2008 9:48 AM

Agreed. It looks like it's meant to be a dash of some sort. That said, a colon would have been worth considering in this context. But maybe they felt it was too formal a stop.

The term for improper kerning is 'keming'

Posted by Krrrk | February 20, 2008 1:45 PM

That's an em dash alright. It depends on which style manual you use, but no spaces is correct usage.

How is it to go through life on sphincter level 10?

Posted by opus | February 20, 2008 9:17 PM

With a lot of the Stranger staff overusing emdashes—most notably Dan, Josh, and Erica—you'd think Chris would know one when he saw one.
