How much do right-wing talkers hate gay people? They hate us so much that they’ll mock a heterosexual actor less than two hours after his tragic and accidental death—why? Because that actor had the nerve to play one gay role over the course of his more than decade-long career. Via Towleroad:

FOX News host John Gibson revelled in Heath Ledger’s death yesterday on his radio show, finding a new opportunity to mock Brokeback Mountain (and by proxy, gay love), which in 2006 he called a “gay agenda movie,” Think Progress reports:

“Playing an audio clip of the iconic quote, ‘I wish I knew how to quit you’ from Ledger’s gay romance movie Brokeback Mountain, Gibson disdainfully quipped, ‘Well, he found out how to quit you.’ Laughing, Gibson then played another clip from Brokeback Mountain in which Ledger said, ‘We’re dead,’ followed by his own, mocking ‘We’re dead’ before playing the clip again.”

Here’s hoping actors and directors in Hollywood take note and, like Barack Obama, refuse to go on Fox News programs. You can hear the clip at Think Progress.

What a fucking pig.

UPDATE: In case you feel so moved…

Gibson’s email: Show’s email: Network’s email: CEO of Fox News:

And, yes, Gibson’s comments go a long way toward perpetuating the injustice documented in the post below this one.

Stuff like this makes ME want to come unhinged.

What this country needs is a nice, cleansing killing spree.

Posted by Boomer in NYC | January 24, 2008 8:41 AM

Okay Dan, can you post some nice pictures of kittens or puppies now? PLEASE!!???

that is just in such poor taste. would they do the same to someone like tom hanks, for playing gay in philadelphia? or to hillary swank for being in boys don't cry? probably not. heath was young and beautiful and talented and brokeback was a good movie. my mother said that seeing brokeback was the first time that she had ever truly realized how painful it can be to be gay... those wingers just can't handle the fact that a lot of people felt gay sympathy.

Posted by blech | January 24, 2008 8:52 AM

What a skeazy fucktard

Posted by UNPAID BLOGGER | January 24, 2008 8:54 AM

There needs to be an Imus-sized outrage followed by a formal apology on behalf of Heath's family, ex-partner and their daughter.

Posted by Cat in Chicago | January 24, 2008 8:56 AM

Gibson looks like a total fag.

Posted by Mike in MO | January 24, 2008 8:57 AM

#7, i really wish that would happen, but i'm not so sure. is there contact info for this scumbag on the fox site?

Posted by jayme | January 24, 2008 8:58 AM

very low blow.
Religious fanatics hate the gays and yet preach that God is about love.

Does this asshole know how out of touch he is with most of America?

Posted by six shooter | January 24, 2008 9:00 AM

Fox should hire Fred Phelps to do on-air editorials. I think he really fits the brand.

Posted by flamingbanjo | January 24, 2008 9:04 AM

I wish the 'mos would suddenly get violent and start beating the shit out of these people. I would, but I'm on the Ally McBeal look-like-a-stick diet. You know, where you fuck a lot of men. It works.

Posted by Mr. Poe | January 24, 2008 9:06 AM

he makes my attitude look refined.

Posted by Bellevue Ave | January 24, 2008 9:07 AM

Well, It's not exactly like this was on NPR or something. It's FOX FUCKING NEWS, for Chrissakes. What in the hell did you expect?

Posted by Fifty-Two-Eighty | January 24, 2008 9:09 AM

i take a small consolation that so many right wing types are so desperatly ugly...

Disgusting, and so fucking juvenile. Does this country have to be run by men permanently trying to work through the traumas of their adolescence?

Posted by left coast | January 24, 2008 9:21 AM

Getting angry at Fox News anchors for saying something horribly tasteless is like getting angry at a stray dog for crapping on the lawn.

Posted by tsm | January 24, 2008 9:25 AM

tsm, why don't you afford me the same acceptance? don't i crap on everyone's lawn here all the time?

Posted by Bellevue Ave | January 24, 2008 9:30 AM

Someone needs to cut his balls off.

If his isn't all alone in his apartment at night, if he is actually married to a woman, then that woman is obligated to never have sex with this piece of fucking shit again.

Posted by ecce homo | January 24, 2008 9:30 AM

Really, it's the internet's fault. The guy's broadcast would have disappeared into the airwave ether otherwise. But no, I got to hear it at the click of a button.
I wasn't offended, but I'm also done with caring what radio/TV hosts say. It's so easy not to listen.

Posted by Jason Josephes | January 24, 2008 9:33 AM

I suppose, BA, but I'd expect you to have been housebroken.

Posted by tsm | January 24, 2008 9:37 AM

I'm a stray dog dude, I crap where I want.

Posted by Bellevue Ave | January 24, 2008 9:41 AM

Somebody should sign up Mr. Gibson for all the gay porn sites they can find. Clearly he's cranky because he needs his fix.

Posted by Greg | January 24, 2008 9:51 AM

If you want to put those email to good use and don't feel like writing a long drawn out letter, send an email to all the addresses with one simple request:

"Please send me a list of sponsors who advertise on Fox News, and particularly John Gibson's show.

Thank you,"

Posted by monkey | January 24, 2008 9:52 AM

Of course the way he is going to defend this is to point out the glee with which people celebrated Jerry Falwell's death. I am glad that Falwell is dead, and I am OK with my own hypocrisy.

Posted by Someone Somewhere | January 24, 2008 10:19 AM

Did Heath Ledger dedicate his life to stealing from the poor and defenseless and spewing hatred in the name of Jesus?

Posted by left coast | January 24, 2008 10:33 AM

Of course you're hypocritical. Everyone is.

Posted by Jason Josephes | January 24, 2008 10:33 AM

Falwell made the world worse. At a minimum, Ledger was a neutral influence, neither good nor bad. (At a maximum, he inspired people with his performance in Brokeback.) You're not a hypocrite, at least not on this issue.

Posted by keshmeshi | January 24, 2008 10:35 AM

There's a difference between going after Falwell when he died and going after Heath Ledger. Falwell was a public figure whose job was to speak publically about god and religion and politics and whatever else shit he thought it necessary to lecture us about. Ledger was an actor playing a role in a narrative film. Actors, appearing in a role, aren't making a public statement, (unless, they want to). Also, I don't recall liberal news types and commentators being that vicious about Falwell. Yes, the comedians had a field day, but unlike the right, most liberal commentators have the courtesy to be respectful of the dead, even if they are loathsome.

Posted by michael strangeways | January 24, 2008 10:36 AM

Thanks for posting the emails. I'm on it--

Posted by Boomer in NYC | January 24, 2008 10:51 AM

That's a picture of John Gibson? I thought it was my grandmother.

Posted by Mahtli69 | January 24, 2008 10:57 AM

Geez, how disgusting.

And just as a sidenote, Heath Ledger actually played a gay cyclist on an Australian TV show before he became famous in America.

Posted by Jennifer | January 24, 2008 11:47 AM

Hey Dan-
Fox doesn't give a shit about anything except what Fox gives a shit about.
Don't bother posting their contact info

I don't watch any of that crap so I don't know who's payin' for it. I'd sure hate to think it was me because of where I spend my $$$.

Posted by sceptic | January 24, 2008 11:52 AM

Thanks for providing contact info for the bigots at FOX. This is a disguisting display of human nature and I'm definitely writing to let them know how I feel about this.

Posted by Josh | January 24, 2008 11:59 AM

Where could I find the sponsors of FoxNews? Writing to the sponsors and stating one's displeasure with too whome they give money would do a lot I would think. Boycotts rarely work, I am not suggesting a boycott.

Posted by Sargon Bighorn | January 24, 2008 12:12 PM

@35, I agree, we should list the advertisers who are on Fox and contact THEM about John Gibson.

Posted by Cato the Younger Younger | January 24, 2008 12:59 PM

See, there's the problem. You don't KNOW who the advertisers are, because you don't watch Fox News, so neither Fox News nor the advertisers have any reason to care what you think.

Posted by Fnarf | January 24, 2008 1:53 PM

More reasons to hate Fox News. Oh yeah, and love Obama.

Posted by julie | January 24, 2008 3:56 PM

I've officially decided that I can still be a practicing Buddhist and hate the fuck out of Fox News. How tasteless. I'm voting John Gibson as the next Larry Craig/Ted Haggard type to be outed.

Posted by catnextdoor in albuquerque | January 24, 2008 4:50 PM

Thatīs shitty. Thatīs not even politcal, thatīs not even prejudice, itīs the kind of dehumanization and cruelty that...yes, Iīll go for it - was the kind of thing that led up to the Nazis. If this isnīt the end of this jackassī career I donīt know why not.

aOf course John Gibson is an ugly old Mary nelly bottom who puts his free parking in the rear teeshirt whenever Roger Ailes is around. We have freedom of speech in this country until gays want to be represented. FUCK FOX!!!!
